Department Overview:

The Institute on Aging administers the Midlife in the U.S. (MIDUS), a large national longitudinal study. MIDUS follows behavioral, psychological, social, and biological aging of U.S. adults who were between ages 25 and 75 at the first wave in 1995. This major study is funded by the National Institute on Aging and involves researchers from many universities throughout the U.S. The sample includes over 7,000 original core respondents and 4,000 refresher respondents, as well as 1,100+ African American respondents from Milwaukee, WI. MIDUS is at the forefront of national longitudinal research linking psychosocial and behavioral factors to health and well-being across various subgroups, including a comprehensive array of biological, genetic, and neurological assessments.

Qualifications:

Graduate student enrolled at UW-Madison

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

This position requires experience in using SPSS (or comparable statistical packages such as Stata), word processor, and spreadsheets to clean and manage research data files. Background or interest in quantitative research methods is preferred as well.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The PA will work with MIDUS staff (researchers, data engineers) to prepare release of MIDUS data and documentation to the public domain. Tasks may include cleaning and processing newly collected data, preparing accompanying documentation, preparing and managing linkages to external data sources (e.g., National Death Index, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services), and preparing newsletter for data users. This work requires good organizational and critical thinking skills
