Department Overview:

MEP brings together the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) and the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in a locally based, nationally relevant, research-practice partnership. MEP joins research and practice by engaging in mutually defined, high-quality, problem-based research that contributes to policy, builds capacity, and strengthens practice.

Collaborating on MEP are UW Madison researchers and faculty; MMSD administration, teachers and staff; and stakeholders from the broader Madison community. The partnership enables research to be conducted more quickly and results released more efficiently—to advance strategies that benefit Madison students, families, and schools.

2 days a week for 1-2 hours a day (3 time blocks available between 11:45am-4:15pm)
15 minutes prep for each session
30 minutes session
15 minute reflection

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

$17.00

Qualifications:

Work Study eligible and currently enrolled student
Interest in math education or math tutoring
Must have availability during the same time block minimum of 2-3 times per week
Prior tutoring experience is a plus, but not required - comprehensive orientation and training are provided through Madison Metropolitan School District and the Morgridge Center for Public Service.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Strong written and oral communication skills
Strong organizational skills
Prior tutoring experience (not required)
Ability to effectively communicate sensitivity, respect, and understanding of the needs of diverse students
Ability to establish and maintain a trusting and positive working relationship with students
Ability to be adaptive/flexible in your approach to best support student's individual needs
Bilingual (Spanish, Hmong, etc…) is a plus

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Program provides math tutoring support to students attending Sherman Middle School. Tutors will report to a school-based staff member who will assist in setting up a tutoring schedule depending on student and classroom needs.

Tutors must complete an MMSD background check, required (asynchronous video) virtual training, and four instructional trainings (two in person, two asynchronous online). Tutors will be paid for trainings at their usual hourly rate of $17.

Job Responsibilities:
Tutor students to support their success in math.
Continue to engage in professional development by working with classroom teachers.
Support students in a fun and professional manner.
Develop and maintain relationships with students, volunteers, teachers, and other staff.
Report to and collaborate with Kelley McCann; communicate scheduling conflicts in a timely fashion as needed.
Log hours regularly.

Time Commitment:
~4-6 hours per week (including travel time)
2x days of 1-2 hour sessions (15 min prep, 30 min tutoring, 15 min reflection)

This position will report directly to the site’s designated point of contact. The Math Tutor is expected to participate in ongoing tutor training and ongoing support including observations/evaluations. Work 1:1 with middle school students to support math learning. Maintain communication with school site personnel and teacher.
