Department Overview:

The Wisconsin School of Business (WSB) Student Orientation, Advising, & Registration (SOAR) Program seeks to introduce incoming UW-Madison students to the academic requirements and opportunities that are available to them through the majors and certificates within WSB. In conjunction with SOAR programming provided by the Office of Student Transition and Family Engagement (OSTFE), WSB SOAR is an integral component of the new student experience that welcomes a variety of incoming students including, but not limited to, Direct Admit students, Pre-Business students, Transfer students, & Cohort students. The WSB SOAR Program seeks to be an innovative leader in advising practices at UW-Madison through advising these students at SOAR.

● June 11 (Tour of the Capitol Building, begins after SOAR on June 11)
● July 7 (Bowling at the Sett)

Time Commitment:

You are welcome to have other summer obligations (employment/classes) provided they do not conflict with the SOAR schedule listed above.

Compensation:

$20.00/Hour (This position does not qualify for tuition remission.)

The SOAR schedule listed above results in approximately 341 hours worked in this role.

Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree required
● Graduate Student status at UW-Madison required
● Graduation date from graduate program must be later than Spring 2025
● Strong interest in working with undergraduate students in student services setting
● Available to work training & SOAR program dates
● Strong customer service, writing, and communication skills
● Professional attention to detail and excellent time management skills
● Commitment to giving our SOAR students a strong foundation for success by welcoming them into the WSB community
● Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse populations

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

This position does not require additional knowledge, skills, or abilities that exceed those required for graduate school. Graduate Advisors will be trained on necessary skills and knowledge prior to SOAR.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

● Meet with incoming students in individual and group academic advising appointments to assist with course selection, scheduling, enrollment, and their overall transition to UW-Madison
● Deliver high-impact, individualized support to students on a daily basis
● Use campus tools including Microsoft Teams, SOAR Wiki, SOAR Reservation System, Transfer Credit Evaluations, Advising Gateway, and the SOAR Advising Module to interpret, analyze, and communicate student records and information
● Offer accurate and timely information regarding courses offered at UW-Madison
● Make referrals to other on-campus resources as need, including but not limited to Admissions, Financial Aid, Veterans Services, University Housing, Study Abroad, and student involvement opportunities
● Create accurate and detailed advising notes for each student interaction
● Manage professional email correspondence with students
● Other projects and duties as assigned


This position functions as a professional advisor role; hired applicants will present curriculum and policy information to groups of incoming students, provide support and resources in individual academic advising appointments, and support peer advisors in their advising roles on course selection and enrollment questions. Graduate Advisors will also provide administrative support by inputting peer advisor notes, facilitating the session check-out process, and preparing materials for each SOAR attendee.



This position will be an in-person role. SOAR staff will work in Grainger Hall and College Library.
