Department Overview:

A 501c(3), Maydm provides girls and youth of color grades 6-12 with the skills, experiences, and connections to pursue careers in and change the face of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). We envision a world where all students know that a career in STEM is possible for them; a world where all students can pursue their dreams as entrepreneurs, developers, engineers, or professors in a STEM field.

Schedule:

The Maydm Communication Intern term is from May 26th - August 31st, 2026. There will be an option to extend the position in the fall semester. This includes training and working days.

Working hours will generally be Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. This role is primarily an in-person role although there is hybrid availability. Additional extended hours may be available for intern work beyond the stated working hours

Interns must be available for mandatory, multi-day in person training sessions from May 26th - June 2nd, Monday-Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. You will be paid for attending the training and completing all deliverables

$16.00

Qualifications:

● Work study eligibility through the University of Wisconsin Madison is a requirement
● Able to pass a background check.
● Prior experience with social media management, content creation, or marketing in any
setting (professional, academic, or volunteer)
● Experience working with or volunteering for a nonprofit or community organization is a
plus
● Experience working with diverse middle and high school-aged youth.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Technical Skills

● Proficient in major social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok
● Experience with graphic design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite
● Basic photography and video capture, editing, and production skills
● Comfortable using analytics tools such as Google Analytics or Meta
Insights
● Familiarity with email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp

Communication

● Strong written and verbal communication skills
● Ability to adapt tone and voice across different platforms and audiences
● Skilled at drafting, editing, and proofreading social media posts, blogs,
and marketing copy
● Strong storytelling ability with a focus on mission driven and community impact narratives
● Experience with media outreach or public relations is a plus

Creativity & Organization

● Creative thinker with the ability to generate fresh campaign and content ideas
● Able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
● Strong attention to detail in both written content and visual presentation
● Comfortable taking and incorporating constructive feedback

Experience or knowledge of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles or willingness to
complete DEI training (we provide the training as part of your mandatory training for the
position).
● Teamwork oriented, but capable of decision making on your own when necessary.
● Enthusiasm for Maydm's mission to advance diversity and inclusion in STEM
● Reliable transportation to the Summer Program Locations: the Maydm Office and
Madison College Truax Campus.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Responsibilities include:
● Create, schedule, and post engaging digital content across all social media platforms
● Develop and maintain a consistent brand voice and presence across all channels
● Write, edit, and proofread copy for social media posts, newsletters, and marketing
materials
● Brainstorm and pitch new content ideas aligned with Maydm's mission and campaigns
● Capture and edit photographs and video footage at Maydm events and programs
● Explore and implement new initiatives to drive interactivity and online engagement
● Maintain organized records of content calendars, campaign materials, and project
timelines
● Uphold Maydm's values and mission in all communications and public-facing content
● Logging hours worked accurately into your timesheet.

Physical Demands:

Ability to be on your feet for 6-7 hours and interact with middle and high school students.
