Department Overview:

PEOPLE is a college prep program for students in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) and the Miwaukee School District (MPS). The program is designed for students with strong academic potential, identifies with one of the UW Systems targeted minority groups and/or is low-income, most of whom are the first in their family to potentially attend college.

This journey prepares them to apply, be successfully admitted, and enroll at University of Wisconsin System Institutions with an emphasis on the University of Wisconsin-Madison. PEOPLE provides college prep services by providing programming and opportunities for growth in 4 areas:

  • Build and Master Academic Knowledge
  • Build Cognitive Skills and Strategies
  • Build Self-Management Skills
  • Build Knowledge about College through Experiential Learning

Students who are accepted into UW-Madison may be eligible for a 4-year tuition scholarship and support services from our PEOPLE College Scholars Program.

PEOPLE is part of the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Educational Achievement (DDEEA) at UW-Madison.

Schedule:

Candidate must be able to work at least 2 days per week at East High School during the following days and times:

  • Monday 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
  • Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
  • No site on Friday

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

$10.00

Qualifications:

  1. Candidate must be a current student at UW-Madison, in good standing and is making satisfactory academic progress towards a degree.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency and ability to tutor students in at least 1 of the following subjects: Math, Science, History/Social Studies, English and World Languages (Spanish or French).
  3. Candidate must be able to work at least 2 days per week at East High School on Monday 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm and/or Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm on these 3 days.
  4. Experience working with high school age students, especially from diverse backgrounds, preferred (but not necessary).
  5. Must satisfy a criminal background check, successfully complete I-9 verification, and complete Executive Order 54 (EO 54) Child Abuse and Neglect training before beginning the position. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Tutors are responsible for providing academic support with school assignments withing their field of academic expertise.

ASCs must be a team player.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

PEOPLE is looking for UW-Madison students to act as academic tutors and ASCs at East High School. Under the supervision of Graduate Academic Leads, with leadership from the Pre-College Advisor at East and Teaching Specialists, tutors will provide tutoring services in their specified subject area. Tutors may also support students in preparing for the ACT college entrance exam.

Physical Demands:

None for academic tutors.

ASCs must retrieve snacks from the cafeteria to our classrooms. Snacks can weight up to 15 lbs, but help can be provided.
