A lab assistant will supervise two or three lab periods per week during 6 (103) or 10 (104) weeks of the spring semester. Each lab period is 3.25 hours.

The estimated time commitment for two (or three) labs per week is ~9 (or 12) hours per week for 6 (103) or 10 (104) weeks of the semester, plus ~12-15 hours of training at the beginning of the semester.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

$11.00 per hour

  • Must be a UW-Madison student enrolled for the Spring 2020 semester
  • Must have completed CHEM 104 or CHEM 109 at UW-Madison with a grade of B or better
  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.00 is required. An overall GPA of 3.30 or higher is strongly preferred.
  • Third or fourth year students are preferred. Especially strong second-year students will be considered.

Applicants should enjoy chemistry labs and be interested in helping other students learn! The successful candidate will have excellent communication and time management skills, be able to work with students of diverse backgrounds, be a team player, and be dependable, professional, and willing to learn.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The responsibilities of a lab assistant include:

  • Supervise CHEM 103 or 104 labs, alongside a teaching or faculty assistant (TA or FA)
  • Answer student questions and offer guidance when appropriate
  • Ensure safe laboratory practices are followed by students
  • Prepare for labs in advance by reviewing the lab manual, lab videos, and attending lab briefings
  • Attend training during the week of January 13, 2020 (Full consideration will be given to applicants who can attend the training week. People who cannot attend are still encouraged to apply!)
