- Spring 2026 semester – Weekly work schedule can be flexible to accommodate students’ class schedule. - Summer 2026 – Increased work hours through summer 2026 (late May-August), up-to 40/week while averaging less than 30 hours/week within any 90-day period of time. - Fall 2026 semester – Option to continue part-time work during fall semester 2026.

Qualifications:
Must possess a commercial pesticide applicator license for Right-of-Way and Natural Resources (Cat 6.0) or be willing to obtain within 6 months of hiring. Training materials will be provided through the position if not certified. More info at https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/pat/commercial-order/. Must possess first aid/CPR/AED certification or be willing to obtain within 6 months of hiring. Training registration provided through the position if not certified. Sturdy work boots and proper clothing layers for all weather and tasks are required. Sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended. All tools and standard personal protective equipment (e.g., leather gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, helmets etc.) will be provided. Possess a valid driver’s license with a motor vehicle record that meets UW Risk Management standards, and maintain ability to drive State of Wisconsin-owned vehicles (preferred).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
1. Knowledge of ecological restoration principles and management practices. 2. Knowledge and experience with regional native and non-native plant identification, weed control techniques, and cultural requirements. 3. Knowledge and experience with tools and equipment used in land management. 4. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the workplace especially when doing fieldwork. 5. Skills in communication, especially interpersonal skills. 6. Ability to be creative, flexible, self-motivated, quality oriented and to maintain a professional and service-oriented relationship with Preserve users and co-workers. 7. Ability to operate equipment such as walk-behind brush mowers, brush cutters, and utility vehicles with trailers. 8. Ability to exercise a strong sense of priority and time management. 9. Ability to work independently or as part of a crew. 10. Ability to read and understand maps and aerial photos for land management purposes. 11. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks including lifting, standing, bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and other motions for extended periods of time in a variety of weather conditions. 12. Ability to keep records and develop reports.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
The Student Natural Areas Assistant position supports a variety of land management and site maintenance activities within the 300-acre University of Wisconsin-Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve. The position operates in coordination with Preserve staff as part of a four-person student crew under the general supervision of the Field Projects Coordinator. Field work focuses largely on vegetation management, including invasive species monitoring, mapping and control (manual removal, mechanical mowing/cutting, herbicide application), planting/seeding native species, and other activities supporting long-term land management goals. The crew gains experience with a variety of common tools and techniques used in ecological restoration and supports routine maintenance of Picnic Point fire circles and public gathering spaces, as well as monitoring and care for the Preserve’s 12 miles of trails. Successful candidates will interact in a positive, professional manner with Preserve visitors, students, and academic users, and establish a productive working relationship with Preserve staff and volunteers.
