Department Overview:
Approved by the Board of Regents in 1970, the Department of African American Studies (formerly Afro-American Studies) is an outgrowth of the student concern for relevance in higher education which was so dramatically evidenced on many college campuses during the late 1960s. Today, the department offers a wide variety of courses leading to both undergraduate and graduate degrees and is one of the most successful programs in the country.

Schedule:
Flexible. During the semester the student intern’s work schedule will be set depending on availability around their class schedule. Hours worked will be between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Summer hours will be available.

Qualifications:
Applicants must be enrolled students or have proof of enrollment. We prefer at least a commitment through May 2026, with the opportunity to extend to additional semesters if applicable. The ideal candidate will: - Have basic social media and short-form video skills - Have clear, audience-aware communication/storytelling skills - Be a self-starter who possesses the ability to take initiative, think and work independently, and display excellent judgment and problem-solving skills - Be flexible, punctual, and reliable - Value curiosity and have willingness to learn new things - Have enthusiasm for contributing to a creative team - Strong organization, time management, and attention to detail - Have some experience with event and administrative support tasks
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Preferred skills: - Strong written and verbal communication skills - Some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (i.e. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) - Able to work with people from all backgrounds, identities, and experiences - Strong attention to detail - Grammar and proofreading skills - Strong organizational skills - Self-starter - Responsive and respectful - Collaborative problem-solving skills - Learning and growth mindset - Able to adapt and be flexible - Excellent time management skills - Excellent interpersonal skills - Able to communicate effectively both in-person as well as virtually or through email/Teams - Willingness to receive and give constructive feedback
Position Summary/Job Duties:
The Communications and Events Student Intern will work closely with and under the guidance of the Communications and Events Specialist, as well as the rest of the administrative team of the Department of African American Studies, supporting and contributing to messaging, storytelling, and strategic communications initiatives.
Physical Demands:
Use of a PC computer/mouse/keyboard to type. Sitting for long periods of time at a desk. Ability to work on site at Helen C White Hall where the Department of African American Studies is currently located. During the semester work will be typically performed in an interior/office work environment, but working some hours remotely can be allowed; working small events may be possible if it falls within the student’s scope of work. Work over the summer may be completed remotely.
