Department Overview:

The Center for Limnology’s mission is to exemplify The Wisconsin Idea by providing new knowledge and information on aquatic ecosystems through research, education, outreach and public service; and to facilitate and support research and teaching based around facilities at the Hasler Laboratory of Limnology and Trout Lake Station.

Schedule:

Up to 30 hours per week for summer 2026. Possibility of continuing into fall 2026 as a part time position.

Qualifications:

Required:
• Ability to follow a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
• Comfortable working with potentially hazardous chemicals, after hands-on training
• Able to work independently and as part of a team
• Detail-orientated and self-motivated
• Able to perform repetitive tasks with a high degree of precision and accuracy

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Preferred:
• A chemistry major with an interest in analytical chemistry
• At least one semester of General Chemistry coursework completed
• One semester of Analytical Chemistry coursework completed
• Have two years of academic eligibility left and interest in working during the school year

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Students will be trained on and responsible for the following aspects of chemical analysis:
• Acid washing glassware
• Reagent preparation
• Sample preparation and digestion
• Calibrant preparation
• Titration
• Data entry
• Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
• General principles of QA/QC
• Routine operation of the following analytical chemistry instrumentation:
o Shimadzu Total Carbon Analyzer
o Dionex Ion Chromatography System
o Astoria Pacific Segmented Flow Analyzer
o Agilent ICP-OES

Physical Demands:

Comfort with laboratory safety procedures.
