Department Overview:

International Student Services (ISS) serves students on F-1 and J-1 student visas. We provide advising programming and activities, and advocacy for international students on the UW-Madison campus and in the community. We also plan many events that U.S. students can attend to learn about different cultures and perspectives.

Schedule:

1-year contract with option to renew contingent upon quality performance review. Every 6 months, students will have an evaluation and have the opportunity for a raise.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: 

Current student (undergraduate or graduate) 

Available to work Global Café (alternating Wednesdays 4:00-6:30 PM) and IPM events as scheduled (Spring 2026: Some Friday afternoons)

Effectively communicate (both written and verbally) in intercultural contexts

Prioritize and manage competing priorities, while maintaining a focus on attention to detail

Provide friendly and empathetic service to students that participate in ISS programs

Familiarity with Microsoft Office



Preferred Qualifications 

Experience working in an office or in student leadership positions 

Experience working with diverse audiences 

Willingness to improve customer service and public speaking skills

Bilingual or multilingual 

Experience living, studying, or working in another country

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The student hired in this role will primarily assist in the following areas:


International Peer Mentor (IPM) Program

Support student mentors and international student mentees through trainings, 1:1 meetings, and engaging events.

Maintain communication with program members through emails and Teams messages.

Help professional staff with the selection of new IPM mentors, including application review and interviews.


Global Café (alternating Wednesdays 4:00-6:30 PM)

Assist in the recruitment of RSO hosts and support event planning.

Help with event facilitation including set-up, clean up, and tech support.


ISS-Affiliated Registered Student Organizations (RSO)

Build and maintain relationships with RSO leaders and ISS dual-registered RSOs.

Present to RSO leaders semesterly about opportunities for collaboration with ISS.


Across all areas:

Market and promote ISS events.

Facilitate group discussions and collect student feedback. 

Contribute ideas and help design new initiatives, activities, and resources that promote intercultural learning and cross-cultural communication. 

Meet weekly or bi-weekly with assigned supervisor and complete semesterly performance reviews and goal setting.

Represent ISS and help us create a welcoming community through ISS programming.

Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

Able to sit for long period in an office or stand for a few hours at an event. Ability to lift 15 lbs and push/pull a cart would be helpful.
