Department Overview:

The Meals Department at the River prepares fresh meals for pickup or delivery through our Family Meals at Home (FAM) and Munch programming.

Schedule:

This position will be scheduled Monday through Friday with generally between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm based on client, organization, and individual needs.

Qualifications:

• 1+ years of kitchen experience is preferred.
• Experience leading others is preferred.
• 3+ years of driving experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Multilingual is preferred.
• Commitment and passion for The River’s mission, vision and goals.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to use kitchen utensils and equipment.
• Ability to operate institutional kitchen utensils, knives, and equipment.
• Ability to work with sensitivity and without discrimination towards people of diverse cultures, races/ethnicity, socio-economic positions, ages, religions, genders, physical/mental challenges/disabilities, and sexual orientations.
• Initiative to continue learning and be solutions focused.
• Ability to communicate information clearly and understandably through interactions with staff, volunteers, and clients.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage time effectively.
• Ability to think quickly and make good decisions when problems arise.

• Valid driver’s license and maintains a clean driving record that supports being on The River’s insurance plan.
• Background and DMV check are required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Serving quality, nutritious meals to community members.
• Assisting in meal preparation, packaging, service, and clean-up, with a focus on maintaining a clean workspace and training volunteers in daily tasks.
• Communicate station needs to the Meal Assistant or Meal Coordinator.
• Ensuring that kitchen area and equipment are properly cleaned and organized.
• Evaluating food products to assure that quality is consistently maintained.
• Following proper food handling methods and maintain correct temperature of food.
• Maintaining and monitoring strict maintenance of personal hygiene, health and safety standards throughout all kitchen areas at all times in compliance with all applicable regulations.
• Complying with all applicable health and food safety standards and regulations.
• Setting up prep stations for volunteers.
• Leading volunteers in food preparation and distribution.
• Driving the distribution delivery vehicle (large transit van or food truck) throughout the neighborhood delivering meals and/or products.
• Operate The River’s vehicle in a safe manner while obeying federal, state, and local traffic laws.
• Leading volunteers in on-site grocery distribution, including operating dollys and pallet jacks.
• Assisting clients by answering questions or providing additional information.
• Participating in community events as a representative of The River.
• Perform other duties as assigned to meet organizational and client needs.

Physical Demands:

* Manual dexterity sufficient to use kitchen utensils and equipment.
* Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
* Ability to work inside and outside of The River for extended periods of time
