Department Overview:

What is Camp Shalom Noar-Bogrim? Camp Shalom Noar-Bogrim is a summer day camp program sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Madison. Campers and staff members of all faiths, ethnicities, and identities play and learn through engaging in innovative activities. Activities include aquatics, sports, arts and crafts, nature, and team building. We are an inclusive summer day committed to fostering personal development, friendship, and community for tweens and teens entering grades 6-9. Camp Shalom was established in 1954 and is the oldest and largest day camp in Dane County, serving over 1000 children over the summer.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The basics: Staff work in small teams to plan and lead a variety of engaging activities and excursions. You will have the opportunity to inspire campers to try new things and build new skills. You will work to build a strong sense of community among campers, and to maintain a physically, emotionally, and socially safe camp environment for all. We pride ourselves in the offering of  daily choices that appeal to campers with a diverse set of interests, and we are seeking a staff with a similarly diverse set of skills and interests. 

You will utilize both our 154 acre campus and a variety of great locations in and around Dane County. Hike, kayak, bike and explore area parks and attractions. Develop art projects, lead games and serve as a positive role model to our fabulous campers.

We provide a full week of paid orientation to all staff members to ensure that every team member is well prepared to be part of a fun and successful summer for all!

The ideal candidate has strong people skills (good communication, a collaborative spirit and a sense of humor); enjoys an energetic team environment; wants to make meaningful connections with peers and campers; and wants to serve as a positive role model to campers entering 6th-9th grade. Noar-Bogrim counselors needn’t have a background in Judaism, but do need to be committed to core values of kindness, inclusion, and a sense of responsibility for the world around us.  

Successful applicants must show good judgment, be flexible, adaptable, responsible, and able to carry out responsibilities without direct supervision.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Upon hire, completion of First Aid and CPR certification (Camp will hold pre-camp trainings at no cost to staff)
  • Complete mandatory staff training week and all required paperwork
  • Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and adolescents
  • Respect for diverse traditions, experiences, cultures, and abilities

The following experiences and skills make you a strong candidate, but demonstrating potential and a willingness to learn can compensate for lack of prior direct experience:

  • Experience working with middle school aged children
  • Experience supporting children or teens with special needs
  • Program planning experience
  • Group leadership experience
  • Experience with Jewish culture
  • Strong background in any of the following areas: theater/performing arts, arts and/or crafts, sports, cooking, outdoor activities, RPG, photography, video

Physical Demands

Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities including swimming, hiking, arts and crafts, sports, games, and more.
