Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Vector-borne Diseases (VBD) Program within the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (DPH) is hiring two (2) part-time positions to serve as members of our VBD Support Team. Past team members have been students from public health, entomology, or other related graduate and undergraduate programs at UW-Madison who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in public health and communicable disease surveillance. Team members will work closely with VBD epidemiologists at DPH, who will coordinate their daily activities. Work schedules are flexible, averaging 10-20 hours per week, with remote work allowed following completion of in-person training.

The primary duties of VBD Support Team members are to manage VBD data using the state public health surveillance database and assist Wisconsin’s local and tribal health departments with proper case classification. Over time, there may also be opportunities to participate in other program activities, such as:

  • Assisting in the creation of educational materials used to increase awareness of vector-borne disease risk and prevention measures,
  • Assembling epidemiological summaries such as maps, graphs, and tables to help characterize vector-borne diseases in Wisconsin residents,
  • Providing support for emerging vector-borne disease outbreak investigations and other focused surveillance projects, and
  • Collaborating with the UW-Madison Medical Entomology Laboratory to conduct vector surveillance projects.
