Department Overview:
The Cucumber Genetics, Genomics and Breeding Laboratory is part of the USDA ARS Vegetable Crops Research Unit (VCRU) in the Department of Plant and Agroecology Sciences at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. This lab is associated with USDA-ARS, National Program (NP) 301: Plant Genetic Resources, Genomics, and Genetic Improvement.
The mission of this program is to furnish genetic, genomic, and bioinformatic tools, information, and genetic resources to enhance American agricultural productivity and ensure a high quality, safe supply of food, fiber, feed, ornamental, and industrial products.
Specifically, the Cucumber Improvement Program aims to understand the genetic basis of traits important for growers and customers and to develop enhanced germplasm using classical and biotechnological approaches.

Schedule:
Applicants must be able to work in consecutive three or more-hour blocks of time between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday for a minimum of 12 hours per week. Hours and days of work are very flexible; the student may choose any 3-4 hour blocks Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm.
Salary/Wage Range:
Hourly $16.35 to $16.35

Position Summary/Job Duties:
The USDA cucumber genetics and breeding lab is looking for motivated undergraduate students who wish to gain greenhouse and lab experience in DNA-based molecular plant genetics techniques a breeding and genetics program.
This position involves mainly lab work including DNA extraction from plant tissues and DNA analysis. Occational greenhouse work may be required including transplanting, plant maintenance, pollination, and seed packaging. Image analysis using ImageJ and data analysis using R and Excel may also be required. Experience with laboratory practices including pipetting and working with plants is a plus.
A successful candidate must be reliable, detail-oriented, able to work independently and communicate effectively, responsible and respectful. USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
Qualifications:
No prior experience is necessary. Training will be provided. Experience with image analysis using ImageJ and data analysis using R and Excel is a plus. Experience with laboratory practices including pipetting and working with plants is optional but preferred.
