Position Summary/Job Duties:

Are you looking for summer field experience in habitat restoration and management? Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance (SoWBA), formerly Madison Audubon, is hiring two crews of paid interns to work at its wildlife sanctuaries, Faville Grove and Goose Pond. The programs provide outstanding opportunities to learn tools and techniques of native habitat management, plant identification, and principles of restoration ecology while helping restore prairie, savanna, and wetland habitats in south central Wisconsin. The internship also includes occasional guest visits and field trips.
Undergraduates, including seniors graduating in May, of any field of study are encouraged to apply. Please highlight any relevant work experience or academic training in natural resources or restoration in your application.
• Faville Grove Sanctuary: Six interns will work in Jefferson County at Faville Grove Sanctuary, Hope Lake Bog, Snapper Prairie State Natural Area (SNA), and Faville Prairie SNA. This program will run May 12 - August 1, 2025. The Faville Grove program partners with UW-Arboretum.
• Goose Pond Sanctuary: Three interns will work in Columbia County at Goose Pond, Erstad Prairie, and Otsego Marsh. This program will run May 19 - August 8, 2025.
COMPENSATION: This is a paid internship at a rate of $17/hour and is a full-time commitment (40 hours per week for 12 weeks). Academic credit may be available through your educational institution.
JOB DUTIES: Invasive species control is a major focus, but work includes seed collection, biological monitoring, and general landscape restoration and maintenance activities. Use of hand tools, some power tools and herbicide required. Ability to work under a variety of conditions in a team setting is key to your success! Tasks involve outdoor work in multiple habitats and in all summer weather.
OTHER: Interns are responsible for travel, housing, and other living expenses and are encouraged to carpool to work sites. Sturdy work boots, gloves and field clothing are required. All tools will be provided.
