Department Overview:
The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members and visitors through shared cultural, social and recreational events and experiences.

Unit Hours
Hours are primarily based around concert show times, which generally involve weekends and evening and night hours. Some shifts may be during earlier times depending on event timelines.
Unit Location
Primarily Memorial Union and Union South.

Must be available to work during the summer (2025).

Hourly $16.00 to $16.00

Position Summary/Job Duties:
Set-up, breakdown, and operate large, complex sound reinforcement systems for bands and other performance acts
Set-up, breakdown, and operate projection equipment for movies and events
Set-up, breakdown, and operate small sound systems for events and meetings
Set-up, breakdown, and operate lighting equipment in various venues
Act as a stagehand to assist in relaying information from the stage to the sound board operator, or vice versa
Assist with set changes between acts
Use forms and reports to accurately set up events and communicate with supervisor
Keep all equipment clean, organized, and safe
Assist with routine maintenance of equipment
Assist bands, performers, and event organizers with questions and requests for service
As you become an experienced SLT train less experienced and new SLTs
Attend staff meetings as needed
Employ basic problem-solving/troubleshooting skills but knows to seek assistance when necessary
Other duties as assigned
Opportunity for growth and raises through advancement to higher tech levels
Qualifications:
Must be available to work during the summer (2025).
Must be able to work with minimum direct supervision.
Must be able to work well with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
Be able to coil cables preferred.
Experience with sound and lighting is preferred. However, less experienced candidates may be hired, and the necessary technical skills will be learned on the job.
Student Status-
To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester. Physical Demands
Lifting of 50-75 pound equipment regularly.
