Department Overview:

The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members and visitors through shared cultural, social and recreational events and experiences.

    Priority given to applicants able to commit to the following weekly shift: Thursdays, 11:45 - 2:30 P Weekly schedule varies; shifts scheduled between 11:45 AM to 10:30 PM, 7 days a week Summer availability desired

  • Minimum Hour Expectation

    Applicants hired are asked to work a minimum of 5 hours per week.

  • Unit Hours

    Wheelhouse Studios is open Sunday-Saturday from 12 PM-10PM.  There may also be special event work outside of these hours

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Wheelhouse Studios Creative Consultants are the face of our organization. They are direct representatives of the WhS and the Memorial Union. As such, they are responsible for greeting customers with enthusiasm and facilitating their needs. Creative Consultants are essential for the day to day operation of the WhS and will manage the front desk, provide customer service, and maintain the accessibility of the studio areas. Creative Consultants also assist with free programming and special events as needed.

 

 Assist customers at front desk with:

  • Acclimation with studio and WhS processes
  • Purchasing passes and materials
  • Registration for classes
  • Acquiring information about upcoming events
  • Troubleshooting basic studio material and equipment issues 

 

Answer phone system and provide satisfactory customer service, taking notes and messages for other staff if necessary. Handle all monies in accordance with the Memorial Union policies and procedures. 

Keep the front sales and studio areas clean, tidy, and well organized.

Check studio tasks daily to ensure that our studio is presenting the most professional, accessible, and welcoming image possible. Check task list periodically during shift and walk-through studio. When working special events Creative Consultants help organize art supplies and set up the space, greet attendees and provide information, and clean -up after the event is finished.

Qualifications:

  • Have an interest in various art forms and an open-minded approach to art skill development. 
  • Possess customer service skills. 
  • Ability to manage tasks while being productive, focused, and flexible in an active environment. 
  • Oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact and communicate with people of all ages and backgrounds. Demonstrate a pleasant and professional manner. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight. 
  • Availability during school schedule. 
  • This is not a remote position, candidates will need to reliably be present at the Memorial Union.
  •  Basic computer skills, especially with web-based applications. Interest in working in a team-oriented atmosphere of continual change.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check
