Department Overview:
Hi! My husband and I live in Cottage Grove and are the parents of four children. Our oldest is 30 yrs old and Brian is our youngest.
I grew up in Middleton; my husband is from West Bend. We've lived in the same house in Cottage Grove for 30 years. Our oldest son graduated from UW-Whitewater and currrently lives in Madison. Our second-oldest graduated from UW-Madison and currently lives in California. Our third-oldest also graduated from UW-Madison and currently lives in Madison. Our fourth son, Brian, lives with us...but we are wanting to be "empty-nesters" and are in the process of setting up the best situation we can in order to get Brian the support he needs by people we train and trust. Brian needs good support by people who care, and we need to feel comfortable knowing he's in good hands. That's the overview and our mission. :)

Position Summary/Job Duties:
Direct support needed for 20-yr-old male in Cottage Grove.
Neurological Disorders (no physical disabilities).
Functional Level is similar to that of a typical 2- to 3-yr old.
(Yep, he does need help wiping after he poops—but he’s a “clean” (solid) pooper. Whew!)
Moves a LOT and talks a LOT. Very active.
He’s a good-natured guy who struggles with severe symptoms of obsessive thoughts which need to be managed by avoiding known triggers (if possible) and supporting him if/when he is triggered. (Detailed training on triggers and effective strategies and techniques to use will be provided with specific training beforehand. Training hours will be paid.)
Brian likes to do just about anything—whether it’s at home or in the community. Since “changing it up” (the activity, environment or both) is the most effective technique to use for avoiding triggers, frequent trips out and about are likely (mileage reimbursed at $0.70/mile). During training, I will provide a list of activities/things to do as options—and you’re welcome (even encouraged!) to think of other ideas/suggestions.
Basically, the goal of each shift is to help Brian remain as physically and mentally comfortable as possible. Please contact me/Amy/Brian’s mom at 608.577.8421 or markamyg@charter.net to let me know if you are patient, kind, and interested in supporting a bigger guy (5’8”/185) w/ a younger mind. Questions welcome! (Did you notice the Org Name? BIG Support & Care? Well...Brian's initials are B.I.G. Pretty clever, don't you think? :)
Qualifications:
Patient, kind, willing to meet with me before meeting Brian so that I can "train" you on how to work with Brian.
I'm a firm believer that the best way to support ANYONE is by understanding them as much as possible.
Since Brian (like a toddler) cannot explain who he is and what he needs, I will do that for him--and it's before meeting him b/c understanding how he communicates is essential, I believe, for setting any relationship up for success--for all parties involved.
Communication is key and trasparency is essential, so if you agree (and are patient and kind, of course)--that's "qualified" enough for me!
Application Instructions:
Text me at 608.577.8421 to let me know you're interested.
Then we can set up a time for a quick phone chat.
If, after the chat, you're still interested, we'll set up a time for a 1-2 hr "training session."
Then after the session, you can let me know if you're on board (or not--no pressure) and we can start as soon as you'd like!
THANKS!!
