Position Summary/Job Duties:

Are you deeply connected to your community? Do you enjoy helping people access resources and build a better life? The City of Fitchburg is hiring a Neighborhood Navigator to strengthen connections between residents and the services they need.

This position is perfect for someone who knows the Fitchburg neighborhoods and wants to make a difference by engaging with families, supporting events, and promoting healthy, thriving communities.

What You’ll Do:
You will encourage communication and collaboration, and organize community events with residents, groups/organizations, program/service providers, and governmental bodies. Your focus will be in the Healthy Neighborhoods – Southdale, North Fish Hatchery, Allied Dunns Marsh, and King James Way.  Topics of interest include early childhood development, mental/physical health, food security, public safety, employment, education, childcare, transportation, and neighborhood programming. 

The Navigator will build a vital connection between Fitchburg residents and social service providers, Fitchburg area School staff, faith-based organizations, City departments, and other community agencies. Through outreach and collaboration, the Navigator will share and refer individuals and families to community resources such as food, clothing, housing, meal programs, early childhood education and other services. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Increase community outreach and engagement in the Fitchburg Early Childhood Zone (ECZ).
  • Increase knowledge of and enrollment in the Fitchburg ECZ programs.
  • Link residents of the Fitchburg ECZ to needed resources such as food, clothing, housing, meal programs, transportation, services related to health care, early childhood education, and employment.
  • Organize and attend community and outreach events.
  • Work in coordination with City staff, partner organizations, school districts and program/service providers
  • Collect data and evaluate the outcomes of the Neighborhood Navigator program.

Ideal Candidate Profile: 
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of Fitchburg’s community and be passionate about connecting people with resources that empower and support them. They should be knowledgeable about local services and able to work collaboratively with residents and service providers to help families thrive.
 

This position is grant-funded and has secured funding through 2026.  This part-time position averages approximately 10-20 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

  • Familiarity with general life experiences and cultural backgrounds of Fitchburg residents.
  • Experience in community engagement preferred but not required.
  • Experience in event planning preferred but not required.
  • Preference for residency in the City of Fitchburg or southern City of Madison.
  • Fluency in both Spanish and English is preferred. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in both languages with community members, staff, and partners.

Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license for the duration of appointment.

Special Requirements:

 Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Navigators will already know and have the trust of many members of their community. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs specific to the Southdale, North Fish Hatchery, Allied, and Jamestown neighborhoods.
  • Willingness and ability to engage with Leopold ECZ families in various social settings.
  • Proficiency in verbal communication.
  • Mobility within the Leopold ECZ and transportation to Fitchburg City Hall.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to maintain adequate attendance. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City elected and appointed officials, employees, and the general public. 
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse individuals and groups.
  • Ability to attend meetings and other functions during the evening and/or on weekends.
