Department Overview: | Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.
As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description:

Camp Tall Oaks is located at the Madison School Forest Campground, a beautiful 300+ acre property in the town of Verona that we’ll travel to each day from Lincoln Elementary School. Activities on site include climbing, canoeing, hiking, swimming, camp songs, games, crafts, campfires, environmental education, and stewardship.
Job Description & Duties:
The Camp Tall Oaks Lead Assistant Director is responsible for assisting in the overall supervision and management of an outdoor day camp for campers entering grades 1-5. Duties include assisting the Site Director with staff supervision and evaluation, enforcing camp rules and policies, communicating with families, creating a positive and safe environment for campers, and emergency management. Additionally, the Lead Assistant Director is responsible for shopping within budget for camp supplies and for the daily implementation of camp activities when the Site Director is not present. Qualifications: | Minimum Qualifications:
• Two years of experience working with elementary-aged youth
• Supervising and managing staff and program management in an outdoor setting.
• Positive attitude, creative thinking, and organization.
• Strong logistical and organizational skills
• Experience leading outdoor activities and developing outdoor activities around a variety of themes for 1st-5th graders.
• Ability to work independently and follow direction from program supervisors
• Good communication skills with a variety of different people, including staff, families, community members and supervisor
• Ability to keep campers safe by upholding high behavioral expectations.
• First Aid/CPR Certified or willing to get certified.
• Must have a vehicle or access to a vehicle on a daily basis.
• Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Residential or day camp work experience
• Experience multitasking many different priorities at once.
• Lifeguard Certified or willing to be certified.
• Facilitation skills in team building or staff culture development
• Previous experience supervising, coaching and/or managing staff.
• Experience in training staff and program development.
• Wilderness First Aid certification or higher, or willing to be certified.
