Department Overview:

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses. 

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description: 

The Youth Resource Center is offered to students attending the MMSD Summer Semester in the morning. The program operates Monday through Thursday, 12:30pm-4pm and Friday, 10am -4pm. The YRC program offers participants a variety of recreational and enrichment activities, including sports, indoor and outdoor games, swimming, science, art, music, drama, etc., as well as weekly field trips.

Job Description & Duties: 

The YRC Lifeguard and Program Leader position is responsible for lifeguarding and participant safety during field trips and serving as a program leader when not lifeguarding. Program Leaders are responsible for supervising, planning, and facilitating engaging recreation and enrichment activities for middle school–aged youth throughout the summer program. Activities take place both indoors and outdoors and are designed to promote learning, creativity, physical activity, and positive social development. Activities include: sports, swimming, nature exploration, weekly fieldtrips, science, crafts, music, drama, etc.  Program leaders are responsible for enforcing school rules and policies and creating a welcoming, positive, safe environment for students. Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current or previous lifeguarding certification. Opportunities for recertification, but must have held a previous lifeguard certification.
• Current or previous CPR and First Aid certifications.
• Previous experience working with middle school-aged children.
• Desire to create a positive impact on middle school-aged youth.
• Must possess strong swimming skills
• Willingness and ability to obtain Lifeguard certification
• Strong Communication with coworkers and supervisors.
• Ability to adapt and be flexible to program changes and needs.
• Willingness to work as a team

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience lifeguarding in non-pool settings such as beaches and camp waterfronts.
• Training and experience in facilitating outdoor activities for youth
• Experience working with middle school-aged youth.
• Experience with social and emotional support needs of middle school-aged youth.
• Bilingual in Spanish or Hmong.
• CPR/First Aid certification.
