The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members and visitors through shared cultural, social and recreational events and experiences.

Unit Hours

Kitchen

• Also open 7 days a week, from 7am to 8pm
• We have multiple stations throughout the kitchen, all with full time staff managing those areas
  • These areas include AM hot food, PM hot food, salads and sandwiches
• Students are scheduled to work with full time staff to assist with production

Dish Room

• Open 7 days a week, from 7am to 11pm
• We have full time staff who work early and during the day, so student shifts would range in time starting usually between 10am and noon depending on business levels
• Closing shifts are usually 5 or 6pm to 11pm.  There are always a minimum of 2 students closing the dishroom
  • Depending on business levels, we may have additional closing staff.

Kitchen Schedule

• 7 days/week; shifts ranging in time from 7am to 8pm

Dish Room Schedule

Monday through Friday

• shifts ranging in time from 9am to 11pm

Saturday & Sunday

• Shifts ranging in time from 7am to 11pm

Minimum Hour Expectations

• School year: minimum of 5 hours per week and a max of 20
• Summer: minimum of 10 hours per week with a max of 38

Unit Location

Both Kitchen and Dishroom are located in the Basement of Memorial Union

• Clean, sanitize and put away dinnerware and equipment used during each shift 
• Cleaning of kitchen and general areas 
• Assisting with food service as needed
• Production and packaging of deli items
• Organize food orders into their proper locations
• Maintain clean storage areas and coolers
• Assist with restaurant and catering food preparation 
  • E.g. Making soups, dressings and slicing foods
• Use various cooking and knife techniques
  • No prior experience needed

• Show attention to detail
• Willingness to learn cooking techniques and knife skills
• Enjoys food, cooking or interested in learning
• Flexibility and dependability

Student Status

To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester.
