Department Overview:

The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members and visitors through shared cultural, social and recreational events and experiences.

*We are currently hiring for multiple positions.  Please note, all shift times are dependant on employee availability:

 

1. DISH ROOM (assist in ensuring all dishes are washed and put away for the kitchen, catering & restaurant units; no food handling required)

Monday through Friday

  • shifts ranging in time from 9am to 11pm

Saturday & Sunday

  • Shifts ranging in time from 8am to 11pm

 

2. KITCHEN (assist in food production for catering & restaurant units)

  • 7 days/week; shifts ranging in time from 7am to 8pm

 

3. RECEIVING (assist with putting food orders away)

Monday through Saturday

  • Shifts typically between 6 or 7am until 10 or 11am 

 

Minimum Hour Expectation

  • Summer: minimum of 10 hours per week with a max of 40 hours
  • School year: minimum of 5 hours per week with a max of 25 hours


Unit Hours

 

1. Dish Room

  • Open 7 days a week, from 7am to 11pm
  • We have full time staff who work Monday through Friday, early & during the day, so student shifts would range in time starting usually between 9am & noon, depending on the day & on business levels
  • Closing shifts are usually 5 or 6pm to 11pm.  There are always a minimum of 2 students closing the dishroom
    • Depending on business levels, we may have additional closing staff, up to 4 total students

2. Kitchen

  • Open 7 days a week, from 7am to 8pm
  • We have multiple stations throughout the kitchen, all with full time staff managing those areas
    • These areas include AM hot food, PM hot food, salads & sandwiches
  • Students are scheduled to work inependently (once trained) and/or with full time staff to assist with production
  • This position is for putting away & organizing food orders from multiple companies

3. Receiving

  • This is strictly a morning position, with help needed Mondays through Saturdays
    • Early morning hours, anywhere from 6am to 11am
  • Position would also entail assisting the dish room with putting items away in the morning

 

Unit Location

Both Kitchen and Dishroom are located in the Basement of Memorial Union

Salary/Wage Range:

Hourly $15.00 to $15.00

Position Summary/Job Duties:

  • Clean, sanitize and put away dinnerware and equipment used during each shift 
  • Cleaning of kitchen and general areas 
  • Assisting with food service as needed
  • Production and packaging of deli items
  • Organize food orders into their proper locations
  • Maintain clean storage areas and coolers
  • Assist with restaurant and catering food preparation 
    • E.g. Making soups, dressings and slicing foods
  • Use various cooking and knife techniques
    • No prior experience needed

  • Show attention to detail
  • Willingness to learn cooking techniques and knife skills
  • Enjoys food, cooking or interested in learning
  • Flexibility and dependability

Student Status

To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester.
