Department Overview:

PEOPLE (Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence) is a college prep program for students in the Madison Metropolitan School District and the Milwaukee Public School District. The program is designed for students with strong academic potential, identifies with one of UW Systems targeted minority groups and/or is low-income; most of whom are the first in their families to potentially attend college.

Their journey prepares them to apply, be successfully admitted, and enroll at University of Wisconsin System institutions with an emphasis on University of Wisconsin-Madison. PEOPLE provides college prep services by providing programming and opportunity for growth in four areas;

  • Build and Master Academic Knowledge
  • Build Cognitive Skills and Strategies
  • Build Self-Management Skills
  • Build Knowledge about College through Experiential Learning

Students who are accepted into the University of Wisconsin-Madison may be eligible for a four-year tuition scholarship and support services from our College Scholars Program.

PEOPLE is part of the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Educational Achievement (DDEEA) at UW-Madison.

Qualifications:

  1. Candidate must be a current undergraduate student in good standing who is making satisfactory academic progress towards a degree.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency and ability to tutor students in at least one of the following subjects: English, Social Studies, Math, or Science. Candidate must take a competency test.
  3. Candidate must be able to work a minimum of two days per week at  a PEOPLE Milwaukee site during the school year. Site open Monday – Thursday; 3:00 – 6:00 or 3:30 -6:30 PM
  4. Experience working with high school age students, especially of diverse backgrounds, preferred.
  5. Must satisfy a criminal background check, successfully complete I-9 verification, and complete the following training before beginning the position:
    1. Executive Order 54 Child Abuse and Neglect (30 min. Online)
    2. Youth Mental Health (8 hr. In Person)
    3. CPR First Aide (4 hr. In Person)
    4. Youth Protection (90 min. In Person)
  6. Resume and copy of fall schedule are required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

PEOPLE Milwaukee is looking for college students to act as tutors for high school students at a PEOPLE Milwaukee Sites (Rufus King; James Madison Academic Campus; Golda Meir; Milwaukee School of Languages; Milwaukee High School of Arts; MacDowell; Ronald Reagan; and Bay View) during the 2019-2020 academic year. Under the supervision of an Academic Lead, with leadership from a PEOPLE Milwaukee Precollege Advisor and Teaching Specialists, tutors will provide tutoring services in their specified subject area and facilitate academic enrichment activities with high school students participating in the PEOPLE program at a PEOPLE Milwaukee Site. Tutors provide guidance on steps to become college ready and serve as an informal mentor to PEOPLE pre-college students at the designated Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE) site. Tutors will also support students in preparing for the ACT.
