Department Overview:

The University of Wisconsin–Madison occupies ancestral Ho-Chunk land, a place their nation has called Teejop (day-JOPE) since time immemorial. The UW-Madison First Nations Cultural Landscape Tour seeks to increase awareness of the historic––and contemporary––Indigeneity of Teejop, the place currently known as Madison, Wisconsin, through place-based learning about the Four Lakes region. By engaging audiences experientially with the land, water, buildings, and monuments of the UW-Madison campus, the tour introduces basic concepts in American Indian Studies and encourages reflection on relationships with Indigenous peoples and place.

The First Nations Cultural Landscape tour is coordinated in partnership with the Office of the Provost and Campus and Visitor Relations.

FNCLT Community: Our Indigenous-centered program of co-learners fosters land-based learning while collectively striving to provide high quality cultural landscape tours for diverse participant groups. As co-learners, we encourage and support one another to find the unique voice and purpose suitable to each FNCLT guide. Co-learners engage in identifying learning needs that assures our tour content is on the leading edge of Indigenous centered knowledge development, service and pedagogy.

FNCLT strives to provide a top-notch student employment experience. Our work would not be possible without our student employees – they are at the center of all we do. This looks like:

-Investing in a high-quality onboarding experience and ongoing professional development, including the option to apply FNCLT hours and experiences directly to the UW-Madison Leadership Certificate.

-A learning-centered environment where we don’t expect employees to have all skills mastered on day one. We provide space for growth throughout employment through coaching and regular feedback.

-Flexibility to be a student-first. We always schedule around a student employee’s classes and allow for team members to go “on reserve” in semesters where they might choose to take an internship, study abroad, or pull back from work to focus fully on classes, with the option to return to the team in a future semester.

-Retention increases and advancement opportunities within student employment. Employees who are in good standing have the opportunity for increased compensation as they continue on our team.
