Department Overview:
What is PEOPLE? PEOPLE is a college prep program for students in the Madison Metropolitan School District and the Milwaukee Public School district. The program is designed for students with strong academic potential that are low-income and/or the first in their families to potentially attend college. Their journey prepares them to apply, be successfully admitted, and enroll at the University of Wisconsin System institutions with an emphasis on UW-Madison. PEOPLE provides college prep services by providing programming and opportunity for growth in four areas: • Build and Master Academic Knowledge • Build Cognitive Skills and Strategies • Build Self-Management Skills • Build Knowledge about College through Experiential Learning Students who are accepted into UW-Madison may be eligible for a four-year tuition scholarship and support services from our College Scholars Program. PEOPLE is a part of the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Educational Achievement at UW-Madison.

Qualifications:
1. Candidate must be a current student at UW-Madison in good standing who is making satisfactory academic progress towards a degree. 2. Demonstrate proficiency and ability to tutor students in at least one of the following subjects: English, Social Studies, Math, or Science. Candidates will participate in competency testing as a first stage of interviews. 3. Candidate must be available to work two days per week 4. Experience working with high school age students, especially of diverse backgrounds, is preferred. 5. Must satisfy a criminal background check, successfully complete I-9 verification, and complete Executive Order 54 Child Abuse and Neglect training before beginning the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Ability to work with students from 9th to 12th grade. CRMs who wish to tutor will need to take a brief competency test in their chosen subject.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
PEOPLE is looking for UW students to act as College Readiness Mentors (CRMs) for high school students at our partner high schools. Under the supervision of the graduate Academic Lead, with leadership from the Pre-College Advisor and Teaching Specialists, CRMs will provide mentoring and tutoring services in their specified subject area and facilitate academic enrichment activities with high school students participating in the PEOPLE program at their respective high schools. • The College Readiness Mentors engages students in: -Team building and social/emotional wellness activities that are prepared by PEOPLE Educational Content Specialists and Precollege Advisors -Learning how to succeed in high school academic life so that they are prepared for college academic life Researching information about UW college services and resources that will provide students social and academic support • College Readiness Mentors are needed in the subject areas of English, Social Studies, Math (Basic Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus, and or Statistics), Science (Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics), or World Languages (Spanish, French) on Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3-6pm • College Readiness Mentors will also provide guidance on steps to become college ready and serve as an informal mentor to PEOPLE precollege students at the designated Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE) site. CRM will advise PEOPLE staff of any student needs, issues, or concerns. This position will be in-person at Madison Metropolitan School District high schools.
