Department Overview:

Literacy Network's mission is to help adults in Dane County build skills, reach goals, and connect communities. Literacy Network is a non-profit organization that offers free classes and tutoring for adults. Programs include English (ESL), Citizenship, GED/HSED, Essential Literacy (ABE), and Transitions.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

6-8

Schedule:

6-8 hours per week including every Wednesday from 5:45-7:45pm at Lakeview Library (2845 N. Sherman Ave, Madison WI 53704)

Interns are required to attend onboarding training on the following dates:
-Monday, January 13 for 2.5 hours (specific time is flexible)
-Tuesday, January 14 for 2 hours (specific time is flexible)

$15.00

Qualifications:

-One year of community college or university education, or relevant life or work experience
-Fluency in spoken and written English
-Reliable technology and access to internet, Zoom, and email
-Reliable transportation to in-person classes at Literacy Network or community site

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Preferred candidates will have previous experience with (or a strong interest in):
-Lesson planning
-Adult education
-Working with people of various cultures and backgrounds
-Social work or related fields, with a sensitivity for supporting adult students with interrelated needs (e.g. academic, social, and mental heath)

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Internship Responsibilities:
-Attend paid trainings before and during the semester
-Commit to 6-8 hours weekly for an entire semester: 2 hours/week at your session; remaining hours to prepare for your session and collaborate with the Essential Literacy Program Manager
-Prepare individualized lesson plans for student/tutor pairs
-Maintain consistent communication with Program Manager regarding student/tutor pairs and lessons
-Manage your weekly session (arranging room, tracking attendance, scheduling, documentation, and providing support as needed)
-Tutor students as needed when your session is short tutors
-Make weekly reminder phone calls to students in your session
-Check in regularly with students and tutors throughout the semester
-Complete a mid-semester lesson check and meeting facilitated by Program Manager
-Complete end-of-semester reporting
