Position Summary/Job Duties:
The Goldman lab (https://goldman.horticulture.wisc.edu) is looking for up to two undergraduate student hourly workers to work with us beginning in mid-January and continuing through the summer field season. Our work involves carrot, onion, and table beet breeding research and development. Our group manages field plots at a number of locations around Wisconsin from late April through late September. Field work includes tasks like planting, weeding, assembly of crossing cages, thinning, pollinations, seed production, root harvest, data collection, sample collection, and packing roots for storage. Additional tasks include seed cleaning, data entry, and some laboratory work. Students would gain experience in field research and plant breeding. Some of the field projects are part of the dissertation research of graduate students and therefore the work would be supervised by the graduate students and carried out by a group of undergraduate and graduate students. While most of the work is done in a team, there are periods where independent work is required. Transportation is provided to all field sites. The majority of the work would take place on weekdays though opportunities for weekend work may occur. We are looking for a student who would be willing to work 20-30 hours per week in the summer break period and 5-10 hours per week during the semester. Pay is $13/hour. There are potential opportunities for continuation of work and pay increases. If interested in this opportunity, please apply or contact Audrey Pelikan at alpelikan@wisc.edu. We hope to interview students in December 2024 with a start date in January 2025.
