Department Overview:

Cells must sense and process diverse stimuli in order to survive and thrive. The McClean research group takes a bioengineering approach to answering fundamental and medical questions about biological signal processing with an emphasis on model and pathogenic yeasts.

Qualifications:

Some experience in chemistry and/or molecular biology is desirable, but not required.
We are willing to train students who are detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, and exhibit a strong work ethic.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The position requires that students complete Chemical Safety Training and the Biosafety Required Training Course.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Student hourlies will be responsible for basic laboratory tasks including glassware washing, autoclaving reagents, refilling carboys, restocking supplies, and maintaining basic laboratory solutions. General laboratory maintenance such as wiping down benches, filling water baths, scraping freezers, and testing eye washes will be required. Hourlies should be regularly available to work 10 hours a week though there is some flexibility to allow for heavy exam weeks, etc. The student hourly will be expected to meet weekly (in-person) with the lab manager to review the week’s tasks. Availability to work in lab between the hours of 7am and 3pm is necessary to ensure proper training and supervision.

Physical Demands:

Some ability to stand for a while and lift at least 15 lbs.
