Department Overview:

Our mission at OSTFE to understand and improve a student’s first year at UW–Madison. We are the campus leader and primary resource on the subject of student transition to UW–Madison. OSTFE supports students in self-reflection and active learning inside and outside of the classroom as they create the foundation for their Wisconsin Experience. We facilitate this process through a long-term inclusive strategy of intentional programming, on-going services, communication, and collaboration with faculty and staff.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

Minimum: 5 Maximum: 10

Schedule:

Spring 2025 Semester:
- New OAs will work approximately 5-10 hours per week for the OSTFE office
- Spring Semester Trainings: 1-Day long training on April 19th - required
- Required May Training: 40 hours/week May 15-May 29 (off May 26, Memorial Day)

Summer 2025 (May 30-August 11): OAs will work on average 35 hours per week during the summer months. Classes, second jobs, or other major commitments cannot conflict with summer staffing times. Conflicts must be disclosed and approved by the position supervisor. OAs will also be required to work occasional evening and Sunday shifts throughout the summer.

Fall 2025 & Spring 2026: OAs are eligible to continue working each semester for 5-10 hours per week, given a positive summer performance review. OAs are not guaranteed employment after summer, and Fall 2024 academic year hours are not a requirement.

Qualifications:

- Enrolled as a full-time, undergraduate UW-Madison student through Fall 2024 semester. Graduating seniors are not eligible for this position.
- Current residence is a valid, United States address.
- Must be in good standing academic and non-academic with the University at the time of application, hire, start of employment, and through the duration of employment. All non-academic misconduct will be reviewed for employment consideration.
- Comfortable with frequent movement during in-person program dates, such as: managing SOAR program check-in, moving between SOAR program locations, and transporting boxes and SOAR items of various sizes

- Interest in supporting new students and families through their transition into college life
- Can both contribute to a team-oriented environment and independent work
- Exhibit the ability to work and communicate professionally with a diverse community of students, family members, SOAR team members, and campus partners
- Self-driven learner who can use available resources, ask good questions, test out ideas, and search for solutions
- Committed to creating and maintaining a positive attitude and inclusive team environment
- Ability to problem solve, prioritize, and make efficient use of work time; adaptable to changes on-the-spot
- Strong organizational skills, punctual, and pays attention to detail
- Ability to balance work requirements and a fun team atmosphere with peers

Position Summary/Job Duties:

SOAR Operations
Expertly communicate with students and families before, during, and after their SOAR experience, including tasks such as:
- Assisting students and families with making and editing their reservations in the SOAR Reservation System database
- Being the first face students & families interact with when they arrive at SOAR check-in
- Problem-solving and providing excellent customer service skills
- Collaborate with a team of fellow Orientation Assistants to support the daily operations of the of the SOAR program
- Prepare orientation materials daily and take inventory of orientation supplies
- Collaborate with SOAR Interns, New Student Leaders, OSTFE Professional Staff, and campus partners to meet program needs
- Professionally and positively work in a fast-paced environment

OSTFE Support
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource for the campus community regarding OSTFE as a front desk representative
- Provide support OSTFE initiatives and programs throughout the year as directed by OSTFE Professional Staff such as Transfer Transition Program events, Family Weekend, Wisconsin Welcome etc.
- Being adaptable and willing to step in whenever needed

Physical Demands:

- Ability to lift 30 pounds
