Department Overview:
Our mission at the Office of Student Transition and Family Engagement is to understand and improve students' first year at UW-Madison. We are the campus leader and primary resource on the subject of student transition to the campus community. OSTFE supports students in self-reflection and active learning inside and outside of the classroom as they create the foundation for their Wisconsin Experience. We facilitate this process through a long-term inclusive strategy of intentional programming, on-going services, communication, and collaboration with faculty and staff.

Schedule:
Spring Semester Trainings: 1-Day long training on April 19th - required Required May Training: 40 hours/week May 15-May 29 (off May 26, Memorial Day) SOAR Summer 2025: average 35 hours/week starting May 30-August 11th. Exceptions: June 30-July 4 there is NO SOAR. July 7-11, less hours available due to virtual SOAR (~8 hours, optional), July 28-30 less hours available. Information disclosed during interview process.

Qualifications:
- Enrolled as a full-time, undergraduate UW-Madison student through Fall 2025 semester. Graduating seniors are not eligible for this position. - Current residence is a valid, United States address. - Ability to work in-person for the full duration of the position. Second jobs, a summer class or other commitments cannot conflict with job duties. They must be disclosed and approved by the supervisor prior to accepting the employment offer. - Must be in good standing academic and non-academic with the University at the time of application, hire, start of employment, and through the duration of employment. All non-academic misconduct will be reviewed for employment consideration. - Comfortable with frequent and infrequent movement- i.e. leading students between SOAR locations, moving across campus, and/or being in one area during a designated time.

- Written and verbal (public speaking) communication skills - Well organized, punctual, have reliable attendance, and stay flexible on the job - Ability to stay professional and positive while working in a high-energy, fun, fast-paced environment - Excellent time management skills - Must have great teamwork skills; ability to work cooperatively with interns, peers, and professional staff; desire to build positive relationships - Interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with diverse populations - Be adaptable to change
Position Summary/Job Duties:
- Welcome new students and guests to SOAR programs by providing excellent customer service; Be accessible throughout the sessions by answering questions and assisting participants with their needs - Support daily logistics (check-in, wayfinding, giving program instructions, mingling, etc.) of the SOAR program to ensure a seamless experience for campus partners, students, and guests - Facilitate small group discussions with 14-25 new students on UW-Madison’s academic and campus culture - Lead ice breaker activities and create a sense of community for students at SOAR - Serve on panels and speak to incoming families in a question and answer format (public speaking in front of 300+ people) - Engage with new students through social evening programs and at the Bakke Recreation Facility - Support the SOAR Interns throughout the Student Evening Program for Freshman SOAR - Support the campus partner presenters of the Parent/Guest sessions by timing presentations, answering questions, and sharing your student experience during the presentation as needed - Other duties as assigned OSTFE Support - Serve as a knowledgeable resource for the campus community, representing the university and OSTFE values and mission - Optional work opportunities for other OSTFE initiatives i.e. Family Weekend, Transfer Transition Program Events
