Department Overview:

Academic Advising Services and the L&S Honors Program are hiring students to serve as L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors to help support the College of Letters & Science's summer orientation and advising program
• Academic Advising Services (or AAS, https://advising.ls.wisc.edu/) works with incoming first-year and transfer students in L&S until they declare a major.
• At SOAR, the L&S Honors Program (https://honors.ls.wisc.edu/) works with incoming L&S students who have been admitted to the Honors in the Liberal Arts track.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

Minimum: 15 Maximum: 20

Schedule:

Training (Required):
• Dates: May 19-23 and May 27-29, with the possible addition of June 2
• Hours: 9 AM-12 PM and 1 PM-4 PM each day

In-Person SOAR (Required):
• Dates: June 3-26; July 15-25; and August 1-8. L&S peers will also work May 30, June 27, & August 11.
• Hours: 8 AM-12:30 PM on Tuesdays - Fridays, plus some Monday mornings
• There are no SOAR work hours on weekends or from June 30-July 4.

Virtual SOAR (Optional):
• Dates: July 7-11; July 28-31; and August 12-15
• Hours: Not yet determined, but if offered these hours will be optional and limited.

L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors can have a summer class, additional employment, or other commitments, but it must not conflict with training or SOAR session times. Potential conflicts with training or any SOAR sessions must be disclosed and approved by the supervisors prior to accepting the employment offer.

Finalized dates and more details about daily schedules will be shared with candidates during the interview process.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $15.00 Maximum: $15.00

Number of Positions:

Approximately 18-22 positions: • Up to 18 general L&S academic peer advisors; • Up to 4 L&S Honors peer advisors; • One L&S position may sometimes work with incoming School of Music students.

Qualifications:

• Be an undergraduate student during the Spring 2025 term;
• Will continue as an undergraduate or graduate student for Summer 2025 or Fall 2025;
• Have a declared or intended major in L&S;
• By May 2025, have completed at least two undergraduate semesters with at least one at UW–Madison; and
• Have a commitment to welcoming all students and building an inclusive UW-Madison community.
• To be considered for the L&S Honors Academic Peer Advisor position, applicants must have completed or be currently enrolled in at least one Honors course. Applications from students who are currently declared members of the L&S Honors Program, especially those pursuing Honors in the Liberal Arts, will be strongly prioritized.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors work independently and collaboratively with L&S advising staff to provide new students with an academic orientation to the College of Letters & Science and support course enrollment for Fall 2025.

This position offers the opportunity to learn more about higher education and enrich your own experience in the College of Letters and Science while developing stronger interpersonal, problem solving, teamwork, and presentation skills.

A training period will provide hired L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors with the content, procedures, and tools needed for this position. Additional professional development opportunities will be offered throughout the period of employment.

During SOAR, L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors work directly with new students and help keep daily operations running smoothly:
• Welcome new L&S students individually and in small groups;
• Provide general information about L&S degree requirements and programs;
• Support students with preparing for their individual advising meetings with professional staff
• Assist students with navigating learning enrollment tools (Guide, Course Search & Enroll);
• Identify key resources for incoming students to help promote their success
• Share information about co-curricular life and student involvement at UW-Madison;
• Participate in ongoing training on academic content and advising skills; and
• Complete additional tasks as assigned to support advising operations.
