Department Overview:

The Engineering Summer Program (ESP) is a fully funded three-week residential program for students who will be high school juniors or seniors in the upcoming school year. The course curriculum generally replicates the first year of a four-year university engineering program and includes math, physics, chemistry, and engineering design. Other structured programming such as industry site visits, guest lectures, workshops, and faculty mentoring will help students gain a better understanding of the field of engineering and its applications.

Schedule:

Engineering Summer Program Counselors work approximately 60 hours per week during the residential program. As we prepare for the start of the program, counselors will be expected to attend trainings, meetings and help prepare for the beginning of the program. Counselors may not schedule other large commitments during the duration of the program. Counselors are required to attend all Engineering Summer Program events. The commitment of additional interests outside of the residential counselor role requires prior approval from the Engineering Summer Program Director.

Qualifications:

• Awareness of differing youth developmental levels
• Knowledge of professional boundaries with participants, staff, and fellow counselors
• Excellent interpersonal skills and attention to detail
• Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
• Understand and behave with a high level of integrity and complete confidentiality at all times
• Ability to work in a dynamic team and be a leader
• Strong knowledge of STEM-related coursework, with preference for engineering curriculum experience
• Good judgment and decision-making in high- and low-stakes environments
• Interest in and passion for inspiring high school students to study and pursue an engineering education
• High degree of cultural competency

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

By the start of employment, the Counselor must:
• Have completed 2 semesters of college, post-high school
• Be in good standing with the University: the student may not be on university probation for academic or non-academic reasons

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Job Duties:
• Complete all trainings required by the UW-Madison Office of Youth Protection
• Work closely with, and under the supervision of, the Engineering Summer Program Director to maintain regular and effective communications with staff, instructors and students
• Collaborate with program instructors and staff to plan and execute programs, outings and events, including during nights & weekends, on- and off-campus
• Attend and actively participate in regular staff meetings
• Maintain student records and incident reports confidentially and according to university policy
• Complete all administrative tasks as assigned by the Engineering Summer Program Director
• Host programming that promotes community and belonging
• Work with other staff to facilitate dialogues around engineering degree programs, UW-Madison opportunities/benefits and careers in the field of engineering
• Coordinate study sessions with students and instructors to maximize learning outcomes
• Work with the ESP Director to facilitate weekend travel for participants including pick-up and drop-off
• Serve as a resource to refer students to Camp Health and other services on campus as needed
• Oversee the on-campus transportation of participants to classes and provide classroom support as needed
• Work to establish inclusive, respectful and caring communities that contribute to academic success
• Anticipate, understand and address the academic/social needs and interests of students
• Support Housing’s core values to establish inclusive, respectful and caring communities that contribute to academic success
• Follow Camp Health compliance pertaining to medication schedules
• Work collaboratively with partner programs within the Lakeshore community
