Department Overview:

Academic Advising Services is hiring one undergraduate student to serve as a L&S SOAR Lead Academic Peer Advisor to help support the College of Letters & Science summer orientation peer advising program team. Academic Advising Services (AAS) support incoming first-year and transfer students in L&S by providing guidance until they declare a major.

We are seeking one L&S SOAR Academic Lead Peer Advisor who will serve as a key administrative point of contact for our team, playing an essential role in cultivating a supportive and engaging environment for the L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisor team. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your leadership skills and contribute to the success of the UW-Madison incoming students and SOAR team.

Schedule:

Training Sessions (Required):
Dates: May 19-23 and May 27-29, with the possible addition of June 2
Hours: 9 AM-12 PM and 1 PM-4 PM each day

In-Person SOAR Sessions (Required):
Dates: May 30, June 3-27; July 15-25; August 1- 12.
Hours: 8 AM-12:30 PM on Tuesdays - Fridays, plus some Monday mornings
There are no SOAR work hours on weekends or the week of June 30-July 4.

Virtual SOAR (required):
Administrative support during virtual SOAR programming approximately 5 hours each week of July 7-11; July 28-31; and August 12-15.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $16.00 Maximum: $16.00

Qualifications:

-Be an undergraduate student during the Spring 2025 term;
-Will continue as an undergraduate or graduate student for Summer 2025 or Fall 2025;
-Have a declared or intended major in College of Letters and Science;
-By May 2025, have completed at least two undergraduate semesters with at least one at UW–Madison; and
-Have a commitment to welcoming all students and building an inclusive UW-Madison community.
-Experience leading, managing, or mentoring peers (e.g. student supervisor, student leadership position)
-Preference for previous SOAR student employee experience

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The L&S SOAR Academic Lead Peer will collaborate with professional staff to support the team of L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors while assisting with administrative and management tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to build leadership, communication, and organizational skills while supporting the success of your fellow student employees.

A training period will provide the hired L&S SOAR Lead Academic Peer Advisor with the content, procedures, and tools needed for this position. Additional professional development opportunities will be offered throughout the period of employment.

Tasks include, but are not limited to:
-Mentor a team of L&S SOAR Academic Peer Advisors, providing guidance and support.
-Assist with scheduling, tracking attendance, and managing team operations.
-Organize and lead team meetings and training sessions.
-Support program coordination and daily operations, including administrative tasks such as data entry and preparing materials.
-Monitor and ensure timely completion of individual and team responsibilities.
-Help address team questions and resolve issues as they arise.
-Foster an inclusive and positive work environment that values diversity.
-Collaborate with staff and leadership to support program goals and initiatives.
