Department Overview:

Located in the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences (CDIS), Internet Scout Research Group (https://scout.wisc.edu) specializes in creating practical web-based information and software solutions for educators, librarians, and researchers. Our projects involve merging concepts from both Library Science and Computer Science with the latest internet technology to deliver high-quality tools and services that best meet user needs.

Internet Scout is seeking an iSchool student who is interested in cataloging, digital curation, and information management to join our team in SU or FA 2025. This appointment is renewable through graduation. Incoming and continuing iSchool students are welcome to apply.

In the cover letter, applicants should please discuss their professional or academic experiences with metadata, archival description, cataloging, digitization or processing of library/archival materials, data entry, database or information management, exposure to library software and/or any other relevant technical skills. Students are also encouraged to describe what field of librarianship is of interest to them, and how this position fits in with their broader career goals.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have experience with library catalogs or other metadata, relevant coursework, or some combination thereof.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Basic knowledge of cataloging and/or metadata standards (Dublin Core) and subject analysis (LCSH) is preferred. The student should demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Cataloger will:
- Create and maintain metadata records for a number of Scout’s digital collections, including ATE Central (https://atecentral.net), a collection of curricula and professional development materials in the advanced technological fields;
- Remap or otherwise improve existing metadata to better support search functionalities and other software enhancements;
- Assist with resource selection and other aspects of collection development;
- Work with software specialists to test our in-house digital collections platform, Metavus (https://metavus.net); and
- Assist with special projects, as needed.

Sitting – Remaining in a seated position
Near Visual Acuity – Clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less (i.e. reading small print on a computer screen)
Keyboarding – Entering text or data into a computer by means of a keyboard
