Department Overview:

School of Education Student Services coordinates undergraduate student services for the School. We serve current and prospective School of Education students in all programs, from initial exploration to career goals and beyond. We are the assigned academic advisors for students in all School of Education majors, including health majors (Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Health Equity, Rehab Psych), Education majors (Elementary Ed, Special Ed, Physical Ed, Music Ed, Art Ed, Education Studies), and Arts majors (Theatre and Drama, Art, Dance).

Minimum: 15 Maximum: 25

Schedule:

Most work will occur Tuesday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30am and 1pm. Additional hours may be available on Mondays or during weekday afternoons. Exact work hours may vary week to week.
Tentative Training Dates: May 12, 16, 19 - 23, and May 27-29. Approximately 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
SOAR session dates: May 30 – August 15, with the exception of June 30 – July 4.
Virtual dates: July 7-11, July 28-31, August 12-15. Hours TBD but flexible. Work will be able to be done remotely.

*Note: There may be periodic trainings and team meetings throughout the summer after our initial training weeks. There will also be no SOAR sessions the week of July 1-5, and advisors will have off.

We may be able to accommodate students with a second job, summer course, or other commitment, but it must not conflict with training or SOAR morning hours. Potential conflicts must be disclosed and approved by the supervisors prior to accepting the employment offer.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS
● Graduate Student status at UW-Madison for Summer 2025 and/or Fall 2025
● Bachelor’s degree completed
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team
● Interest in working with a diverse undergraduate population, including first-generation, under- represented, new freshmen, and transfer students
● Strong communication and interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail
● Experience working with first-year and/or transfer students in a classroom or co-curricular setting is preferred but not required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The School of Education SOAR Graduate Advisor will work independently and collaboratively with professional advising staff to provide new students with an academic orientation to the School of Education (SoE) and UW Madison.
Following an in-depth training period, the Graduate Advisor will split their time between direct student contact and completing administrative/logistical tasks to support daily SOAR operations:

● Assist incoming students with their course selection, scheduling, and enrollment
● Facilitate discussions with students regarding academic requirements, enrollment tools and systems, and strategies for academic success
● Document advising interactions and track administrative progress for each student advised at SOAR, with individual student follow-up as needed
● Provide referrals to campus resources as needed, including but not limited to Admissions, Financial Aid, Veterans Services, University Housing, Study Abroad and student involvement opportunities
● Complete additional projects as assigned to support advising operations

Position Duties:
● Use counseling techniques to guide conversations
● Contribute to day-to-day logistics of SOAR (e.g. preparing paperwork for advisors, monitoring student spreadsheets, etc)
● Share campus resources to facilitate student exploration of academic options on campus, such as Guide, High Impact Practices (like FIGs), and more
● Teach students how to use enrollment tools
● Assist students in selecting fall courses
● Meet one-on-one virtually with incoming students
● Think critically about how students’ intersectional social identities impact their experiences at UW-Madison
● Participate in initial training, ongoing skill development, and regular check-ins throughout SOAR
● Bring energy, enthusiasm, and excitement consistently over the course of the summer

Physical Demands:

Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
Ability to communicate fluently in English
Ability to use a (provided) laptop computer and guide others in doing so
