Schedule:

Hours: Scheduled between 7:00 – 4:00, Monday – Friday, depending on class schedule and some work from home if available. Additional hours are possible for level 2 duties. Fieldwork may be on weekends, depending on work and school schedules. Community events will be approximately 4 weekends per year.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, Indigenous Studies or related fields;
Familiarity with palustrine, riverine, and lacustrine ecosystems;
Strong data collection and analysis skills, including proficiency in water quality monitoring and species identification'
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse communities and organizations'
Cultural Competency: Deep humility and respect for Indigenous cultures and traditions.
Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and coordinate activities effectively.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of wild rice ecology and cultural significance, particularly with respect to Indigenous practices and conservation.
Knowledge of Ecological Conservation: Familiarity with ecological restoration principles and common challenges between conservation efforts and communities.
Experience using GIS software (e.g. QGIS), statistical analysis tools (e.g., R or Python), or other relevant environmental modeling techniques.
Graphic design Experience/Knowledge (Canva, Adobe Illustrator, etc.)
Proficiency in Social Media and Digital Outreach Tools
Grant Writing Experience




Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Skills: Attention to detail, accurate, organized and reliable. Microsoft office and email, google workspace, excel. Ability to learn and practice cultural protocols for working with Tribal leadership and professionals. On-water fieldwork training is part of spring work beginning in April.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Duties: Level 1 (Required):
Ongoing communications for project efforts—meeting planning for project team and project partners seasonal meetings, meeting notes summarizing, follow-up emails and calls, feedback requests from project partners.
Plan fieldwork and data entry in February; Participate in fieldwork April through August with other assistants/Conaway
Monthly communications with funders for outreach efforts—website, videos, podcasts, and press kits, social media
Entering employee travel and other reimbursements

Spring and summer duties include (also required):
Fieldwork with Tribes, other project partners
Data entry, data verification, proofing
Work with project partners to develop wild rice monitoring program
Participatory mapping project with Lake Winnebago communities
Work with project partners to implement youth outreach
Work with Tribal natural resource interns for 5 days in July
Seeding of wild rice in existing and new habitats, if applicable

Duties Level 2 (Optional progression):
GIS work for community mapping project
Conduct interviews with Tribal and non-Tribal research participants (CITI training required)
Assistance with grant seeking to support project ongoing efforts
Contribute to models for sustainability of project outcomes
Presentation preparation

Job Summary: We are seeking a sincere and knowledgeable graduate student with a focus on ecology to join our team. The role involves conducting research on and restoration of Mayom ~ wild rice (Zizania spp.) with Tribal Nations within the Winnebago Watershed. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to habitat restoration efforts, understand environmental impacts, and aid in the long-term prosperity of our relatives within the local ecosystem.
** Tuition remission for spring and summer will optimally be offered. Details on remission will be dependent on date of hire and FTE percentage being maintained throughout.

Physical Demands:

Fieldwork in diverse weather conditions, including on boats or in wetlands.

Regular travel within the Winnebago Watershed area and occasional trips throughout the state.
Winter season work is office-based.
