Department Overview:

PBS Wisconsin's News Team seeks a student journalist who will contribute content to the award-winning political news program "Here & Now" and associated online presence. The position will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to hone writing skills and have their work reviewed by seasoned journalists.

The ideal candidate seeks a career in broadcasting or journalism and possesses good writing ability and strong interpersonal skills. PBS Wisconsin News focuses on state government, policy, politics and issue-based reporting.

With demonstration of initiative, candidate will have the opportunity to produce a story of their own with the mentorship of news staff and production skills of PBS Wisconsin videographers and editors.

The position works collaboratively with "Here & Now" and news staff, interacts with PBS Wisconsin production staff and reports to "Here & Now" Series Producer and Senior Digital Editor.

Some of the duties of the student journalist can be done remotely.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

Minimum: 10 Maximum: 12

Schedule:

- Thursdays = 3:30 - 4:00pm (virtual script meeting)
- Fridays = 10:00am – 4:00pm (in-person in Vilas Hall; greeting guests; some flexibility during this time)
- Fridays = 5:30 -7:30pm* posting to website (virtual)
*these hours can vary; depends on when assets needing posting are available; posting is expected to be done on Friday evenings

- Option to attend morning news meetings via videoconference/phone on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (Mon: 9-10am; Tue & Wed: 9-9:30am)(these meetings are good learning opportunities)

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Qualifications:

Working toward broadcast or journalism degree with interest in state and federal government and policy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of WordPress useful
Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop useful

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Duties will include but not be restricted to:
- writing and posting content to the "Here & Now" online presence
- researching/backgrounding news stories
- attending Thursday late afternoon "Here & Now" script meetings
- attending Mon/Tue/Wed morning news meetings, if desired
- greeting/escorting guests arriving at Vilas for on-set interviewees on Fridays
- field reporting, if interested
- other duties as assigned
