Department Overview:

The Center For Educational Opportunity (CeO) houses UW-Madison's federally funded SSS and SSS-STEM TRiO programs. CeO focuses on ensuring equal access and opportunity, supporting social-economic mobility, improving financial literacy, and fostering a supportive institutional climate for eligible students through two federally funded grant programs and the state-funded Academic Success and Achievement Program.

Schedule:

40 hrs from early May to early June to assist in planning and attend trainings; ~40 hrs/week for the duration of the summer program from June 21st – July 19th, including evenings and weekends. Training in June 2025 (dates TBD) must be attended.

Qualifications of the applicant:
• Enrolled UW-Madison undergraduate/graduate student for the summer semester or upcoming fall
semester
• Enthusiasm for mentoring and organizing social activities for incoming first-year students with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, abilities and beliefs
• 1 year of supervisory and/or leadership experience
• Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, including the capacity to work effectively with a range of students/staff and ability to maintain honest, clear, and consistent communication with supervisors and peers
• Enthusiasm for creating communications, marketing materials, and social media posts.
• Detail-oriented, organized, willingness to take initiative, and problem solve independently
• Responsive to feedback and willing to proactively clarify expectations as needed
• Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner and meet set deadlines
• Ability to address conflict or inappropriate behavior in a timely and respectful manner

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The ideal candidate will have lived in an on-campus residence hall for at least one year as an undergraduate. Students majoring in STEM disciplines, who are affiliated with DDEEA programs and who have junior standing are encouraged to apply. During pre-employment and employment, the candidate must abide by the University Residence Halls Contract, the Student Housing Handbook and the University of Wisconsin System academic and non-academic policies and expectations.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Residential Peer Mentor will be expected to:
• Live in Slichter Residence Hall with the Summer Catalyst students 7 days a week for the duration of the programming and be available to residents as needed
• Mentor residents in the Summer Catalyst Program by introducing students to on-campus student-life, including connecting students to resources, spaces, communities and campus programs
• Serve as a leader and a positive role model for new incoming first-years students while creating a welcoming living environment for residential students
• Support academic engagement by monitoring the nightly study table within the program
• Create, organize and facilitate up to 5 evening/weekend activities and/or community-building events per week aligned with the focus of the Summer Catalyst program
• Manage peer conflict mediation, respond to residential crisis, enforce rules and policies, and address inappropriate behavior with a positive and respectful attitude
• Establish effective working relationships and regular communications with the leadership team, faculty, staff, house fellows and students within the program
• Develop and disseminate communication materials including flyers, emails and social media posts to promote and document activities
• Check emails and phone regularly to remain informed regarding programming announcements and updates throughout the programming
• Attend weekly staff meetings with program directors
• Complete all required compliance training
• Work early mornings/late nights

Physical Demands:

Residential Peer Mentors may need to escort students across campus to various destinations and may spend long periods of time on their feet during team building activities. This position may require peer mentors to lift up to 50 pounds during move-in and event set-up periods. This position will also be expected to spend time outside during some social activities, which may include an environment with high temperatures or high humidity.
