Department Overview:
The Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence (PEOPLE) serves over 1,300 students as they move from eighth grade to college graduation, offering innovative programming to support career exploration and self-management skills while building knowledge through experiential learning. Our programming is offered in three distinct units: Madison Precollege, Milwaukee Precollege, and The College Success Center. During the academic year, our precollege team advises Wisconsin students in Madison and Milwaukee public high schools, creating new pathways to higher education for low-income, potential first-generation families. During the summer, our precollege team hosts our students in a robust residential program on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, offering students an opportunity to experience college life and build community in their cohorts, fully supported by our dedicated staff. Our precollege students who gain admission into UW-Madison become college scholars. Our college team offers one-on-one high-touch advising services, unique programming created specifically for our student population, and other high impact practices to foster student success. Schedule:
Preferably Monday-Friday, 9:30am-4pm with a 45min lunch, but can be flexible to work around a student's classes/etc. The PEOPLE office is open Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5pm. Applicant availabilities must be during our office's open hours. Minimum Position Requirements 1. Must be enrolled in an undergraduate program from the summer or fall 2. Must satisfy a criminal background check 3. Successfully complete I-9 verification 4. Able to work 30 hours during the summer 5. (Not required) Potential for work to continue through upcoming academic year 6. Flexibility, punctuality, and reliable attendance 7. (Not required) Must have a valid driver's license, and meet the requirements to be a UW cleared authorized driver (Please read requirements below) - Must have a valid driver's license. Note -- per Wisconsin Law new residents to Wisconsin must obtain a WI driver's license within 60 days of residence. - Drivers from Other Countries: The only acceptable international driving permit/license is from Canada. Any driver who has an out-of-country license or permit (other than Canada) and is requesting approval to drive on University business must pursue a Wisconsin driver's license within 60 days of establishing residency. - Must have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience. International driving experience will be considered if evidence is provided. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. - Met all driving record standards. In summary authorization to drive University vehicles will be denied if a driving record reflects any of the following: - Three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two years. - Six or more points (Students/Volunteers)** - Seven or more points (Faculty/Staff or TE's) ** **Points are assessed according to Wisconsin Department of Transportation point system. Risk Management assess points for two years from the violation/accident date. This includes out-of-state violations/accidents. You may obtain a current copy of the point value assessment. - An Operating While Intoxicated (OWI), Driving Under the Influence (WUI), or Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) violation within the past year, - Reckless driving violation within the past year, - License has been reinstated for less than one year after revocation. - In addition, out of state residents and driver's that have obtained a WI license but were licensed in another UW State, US Territory or Canada during the previous 24 months, must submit a copy of their applicable out of State Driver's License (WI license copies are not needed) and Driving Abstract from their respective state for evaluation by Risk Management. Fees for obtaining one's out of state records are an allowable employment expense through the employee's department.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
The ideal candidates will be professional, very well organized, detail-oriented, able to multitask, respect confidentiality, be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, possess excellent communication skills, have a positive and helpful attitude, and be committed to working with a diverse student and staff population. Candidates must also possess the ability to take initiative, problem solve, and work independently on projects.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
Do you enjoy connecting with new people, fostering relationships, and cultivating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere? This position offers a chance to enhance communication, customer service and leadership skills, while also gaining experience in an office setting. Under the supervision of the Office Manager, the Front Desk Attendant will service as the first point of contact for all walk-in visitors, phone calls, and emails. Your responsibilities will include assisting PEOPLE staff with administrative tasks and projects, answering student questions, and supporting general office organization and cleanliness. A general breakdown of the responsibilities are listed below along with three examples each: 50% Administrative projects as assigned - Flyer creation - File shredding according to Record Retention Schedules - Prepping name tags for students to use during programming 20% Serve as the first point of contact - Answer questions regarding PEOPLE Program precollege eligibility - Redirect questions/concerns from other UW departments to the appropriate staff member - Provide short office tours to visiting students (ex: Incoming freshmen enrolled in the Summer Collegiate Experience) 30% Support the day-to-day functions and maintenance of the Madison PEOPLE Office - Refill the office printers and replace toner if needed - Update the Madison Office supply inventory - Processing updates on departmental devices
