Department Overview:
One of the largest on campus, Mathematics is home to nearly 400 workers including faculty, academic staff, university staff, pre- and postdoctoral trainees; as well as graduate and undergraduate student employees. The department offers around 500 discussion sections per academic year which are led by more than 150 graduate student teaching assistants

Schedule:
Weekly work schedule will be determined based on course assigned. Most TA appointments are 20 hours per week (50% FTE), but appointments of 13 or 16 hours per week are sometimes available. Graduate student TAs and instructors are hired for a single semester at a time. Those who have not previously taught in the Department of Mathematics at UW are required to participate in mandatory, in-person TA Training which begins on August 26 on campus.

Qualifications:
Must be a student enrolled in a UW graduate program, although applications from undergraduates may be considered. Must have sufficient math background to support students enrolled in at least one of the introductory math courses offered by the Department of Mathematics. Must be a native English speaker or earn at least a 45 on the UW-administered SPEAK test. Previous experience as a tutor, TA, or teacher is preferred but not required. In your cover letter, please address your qualifications for and interest in the position, including your mathematics background and any previous experience as a TA, teacher, tutor, or related experience. All applicants will receive a second form mandatory to fill out via email requesting additional information. Applicant review will begin in late-June. Some applicants will receive an invitation to interview for a position; all interviews will be virtual and take place starting in early-July. Applications will be considered until all vacancies are filled.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Applicants must be able to communicate clearly and consistently to students, colleagues, and supervisors in both spoken and written English. Applicants should be able to meet deadlines using good time management. Strong applicants will have taken and excelled in math courses beyond the undergraduate calculus courses.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
All new math TAs are required to attend mandatory, in-person training on August 26, 27, and 29. (Inability to be on campus for all of this training may result in not being hired.) TAs lead 1-3 discussion sections for a large lecture course, supporting students in learning content by facilitating their active participation in groupwork. Other responsibilities include attending all associated lectures (3 hours/week), proctoring and grading quizzes and evening exams, holding office hours, responding to emails from students and supervisors, and other administrative tasks as assigned. It is possible that some LTTAs will be hired as instructors (LSAs) in one of our precalculus courses. Instructors must meet specific requirements in their math background and have prior teaching or TA experience. Instructors lead an active classroom while delivering new content, proctor and grade quizzes and evening exams, and manage multiple administrative tasks related to the course. These courses are closely coordinated and are supported by a course coordinator.
