Department Overview:

The Department of Soil Science is the oldest and likely most renowned soil science department in the USA, and perhaps even in the world. We are home to degrees in soil and environmental sciences. Our department’s research mission includes cycling of water, energy, elements and the sustainability of natural and managed ecosystems. Our environmental research and education, focuses on the solid-liquid interfaces, transformation, and fate of current and emerging contaminants in soil from industrial, urban, and agricultural sources.

Qualifications:

No experience necessary. Preferred student in CALS (Soil and Environmental Sciences, Agronomy, etc)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Qualifications/Criteria for evaluation: Must have organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds, and possess the ability to work with others as well as independently. Training on techniques will be provided in the lab or field setting. Employment is contingent on obtaining driver authorization from the University of Wisconsin to drive state-owned vehicles and enrollment in UW system for the fall semester.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Part time (10-20 hours/week) during the school year with the potential for full time in the summer (30 hours/week). Lab duties: sample preparation and analysis including soil grinding, plant grinding, sample massing, wet chemistry, water retention, sample incubations, sample extractions, soil core analysis, and lab clean-up. Field work duties are: soil sampling, plant sampling, water sampling, travel to field sites, field plot maintenance, and equipment maintenance. School year activities are about 5% field work and 95% lab work and summer activities are about 25% field work and 75% lab work.

Physical Demands:

Field work: Heat/cold tolerance, walking distances in agricultural fields, heavy lifting (40 lbs), and soil sampling needs the ability to push down repeatedly.

Laboratory: standing in place for extended lengths of time, some heavy lifting (40 lbs), concentration on chemical safety.
