Department Overview:
The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) is a research center in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at UW–Madison. WIPAC specializes in physics and astronomy research, with responsibility for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole. WIPAC also leads and participates in several other research collaborations, both nationally and internationally. The production team is responsible for mass processing of data reconstructions and Monte Carlo simulations needed by the IceCube Collaboration for physics analysis.

Applicants must be current UW-Madison students with an anticipated graduation date of 2027/2028
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Required • Proficiency in Python, Django or Tornado, HTML, JSON • Experience with Python data visualization tools (e.g. matplotlib, seaborn, pandas, plotly) • Evidence of excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management • Basic web design Preferred • MySQL, MongoDB. • Grid/distributed computing. • Statistical methods. • Ability to work productively, both in a team and independently. • Ability to organize, multitask, and meet distinct deadlines. • Ability to follow directions and learn new software tools.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center seeks a student employee to assist with the development of a data validation web application. The includes collecting, aggregating, validating, and visualizing processed and reconstructed data from the IceCube detector. Tasks will include: • creating, designing, and deploying a web application to monitor and validate data semi-autonomously. • working collaboratively with other members of the IceCube O&M production team. • following established work processes to manage project workflow and maintain files. • writing clear documentation and tests. All majors are encouraged to apply, but this position would be a good fit for a student majoring in data science or computer science with an interest data analysis.
