Department Overview:

 What is Posse? Posse is a national movement that began in 1989 when a student said, "I never would have dropped out of college if I had my posse with me." The Posse Foundation identifies high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential and places them in supportive teams of 10 scholars. The Foundation's partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition, merit, and leadership scholarships.

What does Posse look like at UW-Madison? Posse is part of the Division of Teaching and Learning (DTL) at UW-Madison. We are one of two Posse partner schools in the nation to recruit from four cities. We are one of the largest campus partners in the country, with approx. 160 undergraduate scholars on campus each year. On average, more than half of our scholars earn consecutive 3.2 or better GPAs in their first two semesters at UW-Madison. Furthermore, within the last several years, our graduation rates surpass the UW undergraduate graduation rates. Posse Mentors have played a vital role in scholar success and degree completion. Posse Scholars are extraordinary leaders who embody a variety of identities and backgrounds. Our office culture is vibrant, nourishing, collegial, and ensures all team members have a voice. In other words, our mentors will join a unique and accomplished program focused on excellence, work with dedicated colleagues and high-achieving students, serve critical roles in the lives of scholars, and be challenged to grow.

What does a Posse Mentor do? Each mentor is assigned to a posse from one of UW-Madison's partner cities: Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, or New York. Our posses from New York are specific to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) majors. Each mentor will guide their posse through the first two years on campus, serving as an extremely valuable resource for academic success, leadership opportunities, personal wellness, and overall navigation of their UW-Madison experience.

 Flexible. During normal operations, the Posse office is open Monday through Fridays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with many required mentor duties and events taking place in the evenings and some weekends.

Qualifications:

 *Enrollment in a graduate program (Master's, PhD, etc.) or other professional program (Law, Medicine, etc.) at UW-Madison with at least two academic years remaining from 2026 through 2028. Dissertators highly encouraged to apply. The first 10-month appointment will end May 22, 2027, and the second will begin in August 2027, pending renewal.
*Must have ability to commit to two consecutive academic years of service with the Posse Program with full attention to scholar needs for 20 hours per week (more or less at times).
*Previous experience working with undergraduates, especially students from diverse backgrounds.
*Submission of the following 1) a cover letter highlighting any a) mentorship experience b) working with undergraduates/youth or c) any teaching experience); 2) a CV or resume; and 3) a list of at least three references (names, titles, and contact information) through the Student Job Center no later than 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
*Employment will require UW-Madison to verify your identity and employment eligibility. The employee must physically present original, unexpired documents (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents) as evidence of identity and employment authorization.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

* On-going communication with Posse Scholars, UW Posse Professional Staff, and Posse Foundation Staff.
* Facilitate a two-hour class/course with the assigned Posse, once per week. These class count as a one-credit seminar. The base curriculum for the seminar is provided and will vary from week to week.
* Conduct individual one-on-one meetings with assigned scholars weekly or biweekly.
* Participate in weekly staff meetings to share updates and discuss pertinent topics.
* Hold at least four office hours per week in the Posse office to foster community among staff and scholars while creating a greater sense of community within the program.
* Engage in regular and consistent one-hour phone calls with Posse trainers in the assigned partner cities to ensure that each Posse site is up to date with Posse Scholars progress.
* Complete three new Posse Mentor Trainings in summer 2026. Must be available for training to accept this position. All expenses covered by UW Posse.
- National training for all new mentors in New York City in June 1-3, 2026
- Local trainings in the assigned city (will be assigned to only one city):
- Chicago: June 16-18
- Washington, D.C.: June 3-5
- Los Angeles: July 14-15
- New York: June 5-6
- Summer retreat in the assigned city (will be assigned to only one city):
- Chicago: July 9-11
- Washington, D.C.: July 8-10
- Los Angeles: July 9-11
- New York: July 1-3
(dates for National training are subject to change)
* Participate in events such as: mentor training at UW-Madison (August and January), program-wide meetings, events and workshops, the annual PossePlus Retreat (February), and Posse Senior Celebration event (Spring).
* Assist Posse Scholars with a variety of needs as they arise. Generally, mentor responsibilities can take place within the 20-hour per-week commitment, this will fluctuate throughout the academic year. Mentors are often called upon by Posse Scholars to answer questions or address concerns outside of formal commitments, so flexibility is necessary. Additionally, many of the events and required activities take place in the evenings and sometimes on weekends.
