Department Overview:

The Arboretum is a University of Wisconsin research and teaching facility, which includes 1,200 acres of prairies, woodlands, savannas, wetlands, gardens, and Lake Wingra shoreline. We restore and manage native ecosystems, conduct restoration ecology research, and provide many learning opportunities for volunteers and visitors.

Schedule:

Flexible based on student availability and event schedule. Typical hours are 12:00pm to 4:30pm. At least one weekend day is required.

Qualifications:

• Customer services experience preferred
• Basic computer knowledge (Word, Excel)
• Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills
• Experience engaging with diverse audiences
• Ability to do some heavy lifting for event set-up/take down
• Ability to occasionally work outdoors with a variety of weather conditions

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Dependable and on-time
• Ability to follow directions, work independently, and work as a team
• Knowledge of/interest in ecological restoration and environmental education
• Excellent customer service
• Informed, rational decision making

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Visitor Center Assistant works alongside the Visitor Center Manager providing operational Visitor Center support for the Arboretum bookstore, welcome desk, art gallery, events, and weddings.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:
• Provide excellent customer service and a welcoming and inclusive visitor experience
• Open, operate, and close the register and credit card machine in the bookstore
• Process incoming orders
• Track and update inventory
• Answer phone calls and direct calls
• Set up and take down events
• Act as a point of contact for/during events
• Troubleshoot audio/visual issues
• Stock and clean, as needed, bookstore

Physical Demands:

• Occasional work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
• Ability to lift 25Ibs
