Ability to be trained and understand multispecies medical needs including neonatal care of animals in production and research settings

Intern Research Duties Include
•Ability to be trained and understand multispecies medical needs including neonatal care of animals in production and research settings.
•Assisting in collecting research data such as animal weights, feed intakes, and other information for research projects involving beef cattle, sheep, and swine.
•Preparing and collecting samples and participating in procedures in areas of research interest including genetics, nutrition, welfare, and physiology.
•Keeping detailed records and managing research data.
•Interacting with various researchers and staff to learn about the mechanisms associated with livestock based research.

Internship Activities & Miscellaneous Duties:
•Internship will rotate responsibilities through different facilities receiving hands on experience with calves, growing beef cattle, sheep, and swine.
•Opportunities, as we are able, will be targeted towards interns main area of interest with potential for ride-a-longs with nutritionists, veterinarians, and farm managers.
•Training on standard practices for nutrition and feed ingredients, reproduction, health care, and other common livestock production management skills.
•Opportunity to learn and operate farm equipment commonly used in production and research facilities.

Job Specifications:
•Primary Location at the Arlington Agricultural Research Station at the beef, sheep, and swine facilities; located approximately 20 miles north of Madison.
•Opportunities to follow research projects to other Madison campus livestock facilities.
•Position could be full time or part time from late May through late August (Flexible starting and ending dates).
•Student should be enrolled at UW-Madison in the College of Agriculture.
•$15.00 per hour; minimum 20 hours/week with flexible scheduling options.
•Some weekend work may be available and/or required.

Position requires frequent bending and twisting, along with repetitive motions of hands, wrists, and arms. Must be able to respond quickly to actions of 300-1400 pound animals to prevent being stepped on and/or pinned against a gate.
