Department Overview:
The Office of External Relations is responsible for the communications needs of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, including press releases, social media, student recruitment, alumni and stakeholder engagement, email newsletters, and publications like Grow magazine.
Anticipated Start Date:
August 31, 2026. Summer 2026 work is possible depending on the student’s location and schedule. Onboarding can be done as soon as April 27, 2026.

Schedule:
Approximately 4-6 hours per week scheduled flexibly around the student's class schedule. A portion of these hours will be consistent on weekdays to establish set times for in-office tasks. Remaining hours would be scheduled depending on the student's availability and the department's needs. Photo or video assignments will periodically occur on nights and weekends depending on the student's availability.

Qualifications:
Required: • Registered UW–Madison undergraduate or graduate student in good standing • Strong communication, collaboration, interpersonal and organizational skills • Familiarity with using DSLR or mirrorless camera equipment for photography and video projects (office-owned Canon DSLR equipment is available for use by the student) • Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, or other photo/video editing software (office-owned laptop available for use by the student) • Strong work ethic with the ability to meet deadlines, work independently and creatively, and take direction • Familiarity with, appreciation of, or interest in the college’s many areas of teaching and research that advance human, animal, and plant health, create healthy food systems, and make agriculture more sustainable
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Desired: • Published experience with editorial or news-focused photography and/or video • Familiarity with video recording and editing • Familiarity with RAW digital file capture and processing (such as Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom) • Familiarity with AP-style caption writing, the use of metadata, and digital asset management practices • Familiarity with studio/portable lighting (office-owned light kit available for use) • Social media and digital publishing experience, particularly Instagram, YouTube and Wordpress
Position Summary/Job Duties:
This is an opportunity to gain real-world photography and video experience by helping to tell the story of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at UW–Madison. The student will apply best practices for visual communications related to obtaining permissions, independently attending and handling photo and video assignments, and managing digital assets. The student in this role will work under the guidance of the college’s visual communications specialist, the News Team, and the Marketing Team to help provide visual coverage of college news, events, and student life. Assignments will include photography and recording of CALS people and events, as well as digital processing, image captioning and electronic publishing and distribution. Editing and processing others’ photo and video content may also be assigned. It is anticipated that this role will assist with scanning historic photographs, and helping manage the college's photo and video archive in a digital asset management system.
Physical Demands:
Medium — This position requires lifting, carrying, holding and setting up photography and video equipment, usually less than 20 pounds, but on rare occasion up to 50 pounds. Some assignments may occur outdoors in various weather conditions and environments, and on uneven and unpaved surfaces.
