Department Overview:

The Office of Strategic Communication is UW-Madison’s central media relations unit. It reports campus news and information through Inside UW, the faculty and staff e-newsletter; The Weekly student e-newsletter; news.wisc.edu; several official campus social media channels, such as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn; and news releases distributed to external media.

Qualifications:

• Must be a registered UW-Madison undergraduate or graduate student
• Familiarity with DSLR or mirrorless camera equipment (office-provided equipment is Nikon-based)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of RAW digital file capture and processing (Adobe Lightroom preferred)
• Familiarity with image metadata and digital asset management tools
• Mac OS experience
• Strong communication, people, and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and creatively
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Social media experience, particularly Instagram
• Familiarity with AP-style caption writing

Position Summary/Job Duties:

This role is an opportunity to gain real-world photography experience in an editorial setting and help to tell the story of UW-Madison.

The student photographer will work under the guidance of the Office of Strategic Communication staff photographers and help provide visual coverage of campus news, events, and campus student life. This position is not primarily focused on sports photography or coverage of Badger athletics.

Assignments may include photographing campus news and events, as well as image captioning, digital processing, and electronic distribution. Digital processing of staff photographer photos may also be assigned.

Physical Demands:

This role requires handling camera equipment that can weigh up to 15 pounds.
