Department Overview:

The Psychology major is one of the largest majors in the College of Letters & Science, focusing on several areas in the field of Psychological Science: biological, clinical, cognition & cognitive neuroscience, perception, developmental, and social & personality.

The Advising Office supports undergraduate psychology students in their graduate school and career exploration through advising, resources, programming, and events. There are 3 Academic Advisors and one Career Advisor within the Advising Office. This position will be supervised by the Career Advisor.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

Minimum: 5 Maximum: 15

Schedule:

Interns must be able to work 5-15 hours per week during the summer and throughout the course of the Fall semester between the hours of 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Hours are flexible to accommodate a student’s schedule as needed. However, interns may also be required to assist with some student programming or events outside of normal business hours throughout the semester. The intern will work in-person, with potential for ad hoc remote work upon discussion with the supervisor.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $16.00

Qualifications:

In order to apply, students must:
- Currently enrolled undergraduate student with declared psychology major.
- Show enthusiasm for psychology-related graduate school and career exploration
- Demonstrate leadership & a desire to foster community within a large department

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Proficiency in—or the ability to quickly learn—key productivity tools, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook), Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides), and Canva
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Professionalism in interactions with students, staff, and alumni
- Attention to detail, with the ability to follow instructions and work independently
- Strong interpersonal skills and a service‑oriented mindset
- Demonstrated ability to lead peers and contribute positively to team dynamics
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, including multitasking and balancing competing priorities
- Understanding of (or willingness to learn) career and professional development concepts
- Reliability, punctuality, adaptability, flexibility, and diplomacy in day‑to‑day work
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and fostering an inclusive community within UW–Madison

Position Summary/Job Duties:

- Update and maintain the Internship/Job Board for Psych Majors, which includes identifying appropriate internship and career opportunities for undergraduate psychology majors
- Work with fellow intern, department advisors, and Psychology Student Ambassadors on shared programs and projects
- Support career‑related events and programs, including helping create marketing and promotional materials
- Plan and complete an individual project that strengthens career development or community‑building for psychology students
- Collaborate with the Career Advisor to collect and analyze student data about our programs and services; make recommendations for improvements based on that data
- Complete administrative tasks, such as filing, data entry, stocking handouts, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Career Advising staff
