Department Overview:

The American Indian & Indigenous Studies (AIIS) Program is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where the university community can explore and understand the rich cultures, traditions, and values of American Indian and Indigenous peoples. Our mission is to not only educate but also empower students, equipping them with the leadership skills necessary to excel academically and make meaningful contributions to their communities. We also offer consultation, referral services, and community engagement programs that support student learning and academic success.

Schedule:

50% FTE (20 Hours/Week), 2 Weekly Lectures, 3 Weekly Discussion Sections

Approximately 20 hours per week (50% appointment). Teaching Assistants are required to attend all scheduled course lectures, lead three weekly discussion sections, hold regular office hours, and attend instructional meetings. Additional grading and course preparation responsibilities will vary throughout the semester.

Qualifications:

- Current UW–Madison graduate student eligible for a Teaching Assistant appointment.
- Demonstrated interest in American Indian & Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a closely related field.
- Previous coursework or experience in American Indian & Indigenous Studies or related subject matter is preferred.
- Previous teaching, facilitation, mentoring, or discussion-leading experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to facilitate engaging and respectful classroom discussions.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and fellow Teaching Assistants.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Ability to evaluate student work fairly and provide constructive feedback.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Teaching Assistants are required to attend all course lectures and independently lead three weekly discussion sections. TAs are responsible for holding regular office hours, grading assignments and assessments for students enrolled in their own discussion sections, maintaining course records as directed by the instructor, and supporting student learning throughout the semester. Additional responsibilities include attending instructional meetings and assisting with other teaching-related duties as assigned by the course instructor.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to instruct discussion sections, communicate effectively with students and faculty, and use a computer for course preparation, grading, and instructional activities. Reasonable accommodations may be provided as required.
